I would consider ok with 25% lost. If i am not wrong 179313 is with diamonds, normally you would lose more if you bought brand new.
Regarding the myth that you would not lose money on rolex. This can be true if you are holding your rolex for another 5 yrs (not taking consideration of the opportunity cost if you park the money elsewhere).
If you don't want to lose much for rolex, suggest to get pre-owned and certain popular men models.

Do not mind sharing, what you bought as upgrade? Another rolex?

My wife and I have owned both a 116234 and 179313 DJs. Keeping them between 4 and 5 years before upgrading we have lost around 25% on resale which to me seems reasonable with the length of time owned and the general daily wear condition they were sold in.
I know the answers is of course subjective however generally speaking what have others experienced - is this good, normal or excessive?

Appreciated or depreciated all depends of the current economy status, you sell high you also buy with a higher price and vice versa you sell low you buy at a cheaper price ... so who stand to gain ?

I would look at it from another angle - How much retention value does it have?
Can I say that Rolex has higher retention value? When you need money, you can get more than other brands through resale. If you want to upgrade you eventually only need to top up less. I'd feel better with this approach.

If you happen to own a model that has a higher return than your purchase price sometime down the road, then its a bonus. I don't think many would buy a Rolex from a standpoint of making money unless you are a grey dealer.
        I will own a Rolex ................ someday!

I think this is the norm.

Some pre-owned shop or my trusted jeweller shop who also sell Rolex watches, takes in mine @ 20% of the purchase price if I bought from them.

But sports models tend to depreciate lesser than the DJs.

This is true, agree with bluescorpion.

Not really concern on the depreciation trend as this is usually driven by demand and supply.

But I am more them happy if mine Rollie can retain a reasonable value if I decided of offload it or pawn for some cashflow.

            When I pawn my K series 16234 at the pawnshop, I can get $3000. (I bought pre-owned abt $4200)

Not bad a value I would say.

Mine would take back at only 10% discount if within a year. Of course with the way gold prices are continually rising (my watch retailer says only rolex follow the price of gold), then you may reasonably expect to be able to off-load as much as you bought. Anyway, the 10% downside protection gives me some comfort that my potential loss is hedged if and when I choose to sell a piece for whatever reason. Also good to know the piece has some 'value' that you can trade with, rather than having to cough up a wad of cash everytime the itch to upgrade needs a-scratching...

I'm also looking to get one. Was thinking of a 2nd hand DJ 36mm. Prefer roman numbering.

Or should I go for a submariner?

                      Submariner,

All bros in the above have pointed out in general the sports models hold better value overtime.
Again to lower your depreciation dun buy first hand...

I am a newbie, so much about the sport models to keep. Is there a specific sport model to keep?
