  • Getting My Dad a Rolex

    Dear All,

I'm thinking of getting my Dad a Rolex for his 60th birthday but discover that buying a Rolex seems to be a very esoteric exercise that requires knowledge and expertise that I don't seem to have. So I wonder if anyone will be kind enough to offer me some advice?

For additional information, I'm looking at a budget of below SGD8,000. My Dad is a big man so I'm looking for something that will look good on his wrists. He has a Date Just - a very gold model - the so-called ubiquitous model as some of you might have described it so I'm hoping to get something that is a little bit more unique as well - maybe a GMT or Daytona? I'm also considering if I should get an all-gold model, that'll be striking enough but would it blow my budget to pieces, I have no idea.

Hope to hear from everyone soon!

    Best,
    Jo

i would suggest either the DJ or the DD models considering your dad's age size.

          For a gentleman at 60,

          Can consider DJ, Day date or Sport series;
          SS, TT or YG.

          milgauss is too trendy...

                Dear All,

Many thanks for all your kind comments and recommendations. By the way, would anyone have a specific model to recommend and a trustworthy local authorized dealer that I can get it from?

                Many thanks again!

Again you want to buy brand new or preowned?

brand new you pay a price from AD, get a BNIB cheaper from private dealer

Preowned can be easily 20% cheaper from preowned shop, and much more cheaper from this forum.

                    Many thanks for the replies.

                    Hmmm ... I'm thinking brand-new.

I just took a look at the official Rolex website and quite like the 41mm Day Date II but am not sure if it will blow my budget out of the water ...

                    Best,

I don't intend to pour cold water. Just want to point out the 41mm day-date
II is way above your 8k budget. Perhaps you should consider a steel match,
namely a datejust, submariner, or explorer II, as these are more within range.
An older man can look good in a sports watch.

That should retail at around 30k onwards
