i just use running water under a tap.

using toothbrush gives me the creeps, esp when I once tried it on one of my model kits and it created very fine hair line scratches when I brush too hard

Depends on the stiffness of the tool. If the bristle is too short, it will have a "cutting" effect. Inversely, having long bristles allow for softer brush, but not as much removal.

One brush i find just nice, is those old toothbrushes that are worn out severely.

I rinse my rollie with mild soapy water after each wear, on a daily basis.
You should try that to avoid accumulating stains.
