Good buys?

I have a small sum $5k from someone who recently departed whom I loved dearly. intended to get a watch to hold this person in my memory.
any recomendation (other than rolex is also acceptable)? I dun mind topping up by another 10% or so.

You can get a Panerai base model for $5k-$6k. Good watch to keep for years.

Explorer II

I would suggest a preowned Explorer II. It will fall within your budget of $5,000. I really like the black dial version I have. The white dial one is also very smart looking.

A preowned Explorer I is also great to have (esp with the Rolex website suggesting that there will be a new larger case Explorer I being introduced at Basel on 18th).
