  • Torn Ligament (ACL) on my right knee

Hi Folks, I just found out that i had a torn ligament (ACL) on my right knee. Was contemplating whether or not to go for surgery. What do you guys reckon? If i do want to go back to playing soccer and snowboarding etc, I would need to get it fix but if i don't intend to get into sports again and just normal jogging...will it be okay?

Natural healing without OPS? Can i do it with mine?

An operation to fix it may put you down two months.
Self recovery takes minimum 6 mths to years depending on severity.

I ruptured my achilles tendon 9mths ago and allowed natural healing without ops.
Now 92% recovered. But will take at least another year to build muscle strength in related areas.

Also depends on your age and physical condition.

I had a friend who had this condition before. It's not advisable for you to jog. Only to walk if you would like for it to slowly recover. It might not even recover naturally depending on the seriousness. By now if the ligament is already torn. You should be on crutches or having great difficulty walking?
Maybe you would like to go for a MRI first and if it is really torn as you said, I think it's best to go for the surgery. Naturally letting it heal sometimes would take a long time definitely, and in the midst of it there is always a risk of you injuring the ligament again and thus deteriorating the condition.
      Just my opinion though.

Just had surgery in dec, slowly recovering now and beginning to run.

I actually tore my acl more than a year ago but tried to self heal without surgery.bottom line, not advisable. After 6 months I thought ok already hero tried to go running, during the run still ok but few days after that very sore. Cannot run too long also. In the end went to see specialist, he said the meniscus in my knee is all shredded because of my heroism.

If you are ok giving up sports and any other exercise for life (except maybe upper body weights at the gym) then maybe no surgery is fine otherwise do go for it. Recovery may take a while but no regrets for me so far.

hi i torn my right knee ligament 8 years ago and i went for surgery. It will be good to do a MRI first to know if ur ligament is fully or partial torn. For my own opinion, i think its best to go for surgery as u might stress your left knee which is gd. lastly if you never exercise or do sport, you might put on weight over the time and life is meaningless when u cant do your sport.

                Hey man,

2006, I had my tear my ACL and MCL in my left knee during a soccer game. It's completely break into two.
Yes, I afraid of been stop by attending any sports. In the end, I decided to go for the ops and my specialist put a 15cm metal plate in my left knee(below my knee cap) and stop from any sports for 8 months.

During the 8 months, I went to my sister' condo using the swimming pool and walk in it but I build my my knee muscles and getting back my strength. 2008, I join the gym, aim to gain my back my strength and make a comeback to sports.

Till today the metal plate is still inside my left knee and I gym 6days a week, soccer 2 times a week.
And I want to add more I broke my right wrist during my work. (also planning to take muay thai or boxing classes)

Don't worry you will be feel. With the current specialist within the 6 to 8weeks you will be able to walk and start some lights workout.

Yeah you will be back to be normal. Hope this helps!

I think you should try and build strength up on muscles round knee. See physio and they will tell you how. Great 100 bucks spent if you see the right one. I use physionique.

i tore my lcl and been experiencing the inconvenience and pain you have too. it can be quite a struggle especially to my daily activities ! I couldn't even walked well for a few weeks.

Thankfully after MRI which was such a relief, there was no visible injury on my meniscus. And despite the encouragement from the specialist to go for a surgery to fix it then, I still dread the thoughts over it. With the medical sciences today, i am sure there are pros to it but probably I am bit more stubborn as i felt it was still not the end of the world and attempted healing it the "natural ways".

For a period of 3-4 mths, i stopped all the heavy exercises activities and took organic calcium, collagen and glucosamine supplements. Supplements is such a great health as it helped to repair the tissues much faster!

And if you are an active person, i will recommend you to consider swimming instead. Swimming offers a low impact wkout for the knees and can strengthen your muscles and joints too. Unlike weight-bearing activities that place stress on your knees as your feet hit the hard surface, swimming allows you to move through the water without placing much pressure on the knee.

how about consider to see a good physiotherapist? I was so grateful to the physiotherapist that helped me along the way! he not just me to understand about my physical weakness, and i learnt how amazing our body structure is. knee caps are just like rubber bands. it could be due to prolonged incorrect sitting posture or prolonged bad habits, we have over-stretched certain area of muscles with the addition of a fall, the rubber band just snapped due to the long withstanding. a good physiotherapist is likely to be help you by recommending a right set of simple exercise at home to re-strength the muscles.

                      hope this helps!

try not to go for surgery as it will damage your cartilage and ligament in the long run

best is to take supplements to aid the growth of the tissues and recover normally for long term recovery

Tiger Woods tore his too, and look what it did to his game. As far as health issues are concerned, never compromise on the level of care. More importantly, do not neglect anything.

decision whether to go conservative or for surgery depends on:

                            1) complete or partial ACL tear
                            2) whether experiencing troublesome symptoms like buckling/locking/gait disturbance
                            1) your level of lifestyle activities and whether you need to have full function (ah ma ah pek can close one eye, olympic runner cannot)

Ruptured my right knee ACL and tore both my MCL as well as meniscus back in 2008. Was actively involved in football on a weekly basis plus I was still in the army back then so I opted for the surgery. Took me a good year before I was back to playing football and add to that a further 6 months to another year before I really got over the phobia of contact sports again.

My advice would be that if you would still like to be actively involved in sports whether is it football, running or etc. Go for the surgery. Strengthen your hamstrings, quads and also calf muscles in the mean time (even before surgery) to avoid excessive muscle wasting.

It's a long journey but it will be worth it when you are back playing football again. No matter the level.
