    Servicing a Vintage

    Hi all,

Just got a 5513. Thinking of having it serviced (for peace of mind, really). I am concern re waterproofing, which i cant test, so i have to take it off even when washing hands. Time accuracy, lose about 15sec a day. Would you guys recommend service and where?

I know it might sound stupid but i usually always have watch serviced by their own respective Service Centre, which in this case, RSC. However, I was told its not a good idea to have vintage sent to RSC as they might changed the parts to the new stock, which, of course, would be nitemare situation.

    Thoughts?

The case finishing by RSC is second to none. I've had the majority of my pieces serviced by Rolex London. Have a look at navalwatch@blogspot.com and see what I mean!

            Pricey but worth it!

            Regards,
            Eugene

If you bring it to rsc you can clearly instruct them not to replace any visible items such as bezel, insert, case, dial, hands etc. i have some vintages and have had all of them done up there but restrict them to movement parts only. They can even skip polishing it. You know all parts are authentic and get papers which add value. Just be clear when you drop off the watch and ask for a quote first. I even give clear written instructions. Of course it does cost...

Any other places you'd recommend besides RSC? It's not that economical though.

You can try CW in golden landmark. Good workmanship.

                    servicing a vintage is tricky.

because you dont want the original parts to be 'swapped' out especially if you visit RSC. even if you give them specific instructions, what happens if RSC does not follow your instructions?

different people can advise you to visit this shop or this technician to get it done. but what happens if you go to the recommended shop and the outcome is not what you expect? then how?

                        guys,

my dad just gave me my grandfather's Oyster precision 6423. Went down to top hour today, was quoted $700 for servicing + restoration. Wanted to go to RSC but was afraid that they will turn me away, the 6423 is 50+ year old

If the watch is working find, just do a simple "wash oil". You can go Lucky Chinatown point basement, look for a watch maker named ah kong. Reliable and not expensive..

Joe Lai on the ground floor of the Peoples Park Complex (end closest to MRT exit) he seems to parts and knows his stuff.
