after looking @ several vintage pieces to decide which one to collect, i decided that 6694 would fit my budget and my requirement - box and papers. the 6694 is a classic piece with rich history. my latest acquistion is one with singapore history as well. i shall post pictures of it in the gallery in due time.

when i first bought my 6694 from horologyfanatic, i thought i would be one step ever closer to completing my rolex collection. how wrong i was. when i first bought the piece, it was 2000 with box and papers back in april 2008. the second piece i bought 3 months down the road, it is already 2200-2400. now it is the end of 2008 and prices in this forum has soared to 2800.

some of forum members has pm me asking me for my opinion, others who knows me better has called me. it is always very hard for me to advise accordingly. why?

this is because if you really like the watch, you should get it especially like a 6694 with box and papers. however @ what price does one feel that it is over priced? first half of the year, where economy was deemed good by most people, the price is most 2400 i have seen in local market. without box and papers, it is commanding a mere 1300-1500 with the watch serviced. so to pay 1000 for both box and papers, people are saying you are crazy.

yes im crazy, 6694 with box and papers are getting more rare. looking @ the current economic situation, a 6694 with box and papers costing more than 2500 is simpy too high a price for me to pay for. however, if you feel that it is a die die must have watch, then go ahead and pay for it.

I have been running around looking for 6694 with box and paper. Most of the places I gone to said this to me: "Aiyah dun have leh... 6694 with paper where to find? Quite impossible one lah..."

Hear those comments until sianz... "feels like telling them that it's they dun have. Not impossible to find..." However, this makes collecting 6694 with paper and box even more challenging!! I totally agree with bro triton's view... 6694 with paper is getting rarer and rarer now.

Yes of course people dun wear paper around. It is oneself's ego thingy that says: Hmm... I got a complete set of 6694 while other's dun have!! From my running around sourcing for 6694 set, I can see that the market is really flooded with 6694. But one with paper and even original box is like needle in a haystack.

Market price is always affected by the supply vs demand rule. Of cos the "In" thing now is sport watches. But vintage watches always holds a place in the horology industry. Who knows if complete set of 6694 may become models like 1675, 1680, where prices shot up ten folds?? Manual winding vintage watches do touch the heart of some horology collectors as compared to the autos.

Actually based on value of 6694 for the past 20 over years. Can still see that it still appreciates in value and better than keeping money in the bank's savings account. - For eg: A 6694 was bought for SGD $650 in year 1985, based on cumulative inflation rate of 6% yearly, 20 years down the road the $650 will equate to $785.27. Saving the $650 in a bank that gives you 0.3% interest yearly will equate to $688.07. Market price for 6694 in year 2005 on the pessimistic side should be around 1k perhaps? Comparatively still more "worth it" in terms of value/investment. (Based on my simple calculation)

Some ppl may feel that paying a few grands for a vintage watch (Manual winding some more) not worth it. Might as well spend another few grands to get a Sub, SD etc... But to see the gain in the value of the watch, one will have to wait "long long" as it is a too common watch today...

End of the day, it all boils down to individual's liking or beliefs.

I must be the lucky few... Dad gave me his.

Had always loved antique watches, and having one that runs in the family from day 1 makes it feel all so real.

It still keeps time ever so acurately

No box, no paper but with a known watch history.
Would never part with this sentimental piece - a Blue dial with Gold indices

Cannot count like that. You forgot to add in servicing cost. Servicing can amount to $1000+. Watch is not for investment.

Very true... it is a bonus if the price goes up but if investment is main concern, better try something else... I've see friends/ acquaintainces acquire timepieces thinking they can flip it for some easy cash, only to crash and burn eventually, wasted time and monies in the end...

Very true on this. Yes when you want to sell the watch people press the price until low low. Servicing cost also not cheap.

What you say is very true. When we buy a pre-own watch, we want to have it serviced and the cost nowadays can be easily $400-500 minimum if done thru RSC.

And when we decide to flip, it's not easy to get the buyer to accept the "investment" we have made on the watch.

couldnt agree more. to be frank, part of the blame on recent years horological price inflation shld be placed on the foot these specuvestors.

No lah bro, think you misunderstood my meaning liao... What I meant is buying a good time piece you really like, is kinda like a form of saving some money aside. In my case, I am the " Spend any cash on hand" type of person. At least I know that end of the day, I see something in my posession rather than dunno where I spent all my money. You know what I mean?

Also watches can be pass down sort of like heirloom to your children. Something that they can remember about you when you are no longer around... So I find vintage watches is a rather suitable candidate.

If invest in something else, sure you may earn more. But it is a double edge sword. You can get badly burned also End of the day is either you earned alot of become a bankrupt... See nothing in the end and nothing to pass down...

investment or not, rolex watches are one of the very few luxury goods that hold their value. of course you buy what you like and not to base solely on the prospect of appreciation in value. most rolex watches you buy today will preserve at least a certain (high) percentage of your cost if you sell it in couple of years. that's not too bad a deal considering the enjoyment of wearing such wonderful watches. buying the right one (certain sport models or vintage pieces) may even yield some return
