  • Markets plummet! good for collecting vintage?

If there is one thing that is going to come out of the current credit crisis and the collapse of several financial institutions... is that the prices of vintage rolex pieces will likely decline in the coming months to more attractive levels ... heh heh.

conserve cash first and hold on, bros!

Bro, while watches may potentially be "cheaper", this crisis will definitely wreck damage to a lot of people, both greedy investor and sadly affecting many innocent and ordinary people.

My only hope is that the crisis ends soon

I think this will last for at least 2 years

at the minimum......I think quite a few companies have stakes in Lehman brothers, but many are probably not being very open about it...

On the contrary, I think vintage watches will maintain their prices. I believe vintage collectors buy for long time .. after all, watches are already "vintage". I believe it is the new series of watches, the prices will come down - less demand, price drop.

After all, the ADs have to pay rent, their staff and warehousing and very soon, they would have no choice but to sell at lower prices.

new watches, by a little... but rolex would rather just contract production.

                  for vintage:
yes in the long term... prices will probably rise... but in the short term i.e. 1-2 years , it will depress or lower prices, that is long enough to find some good buys! After all, most sellers will be selling individually and cannot restrict supply, the way the manufacturer can.

... so just waiting and decided to postpone all purchases for a while

Doubt it would move much if it has not already.

If anything, since the sub-prime started, maybe a lot of watches bound for US might have already ended up in Asia already. Unless there is a huge stockpile of Rolex by some dealer out there that has leveraged the coy to buy this stockpile, doubt there would be firesale anytime soon. You'd get the odd businessmen selling his gold 1601 for some cash but given Asia bidders, sure drive prices up in feeding frenzy.

I'm an old newbie....hence my handle.

I seriously doubt that prices of vintage rolexes will drop. Many vintage rolex collectors that I know have seriously deep pockets. They will not sell off their prized collection because of the current situation.

                      Jus my 2 cents worth........

Maybe the current models as the ADs tries to move them. As for the vintage series...I greatly doubt it.

True... if these guys get into trouble, selling off their rolexes wouldn't really help anyway, unless they have them in the hundreds. At most, we might find some at selloff auctions. Prices then wouldn't go really low anyway...

                          So either way... status quo...
