  • Look what a watchmaker did to my friend's rolex !

This friend is from Hong Kong. He sent his watch to an "independent" watchmaker. I think the movement of the watch was serviced (quite cheap too) but the technician did not waterproof the watch, so moisture seeped in !!!

Not saying that "independent" watchmakers cannot be relied upon, you have to make sure you find a good one!

Most importantly, don't look for a cheap deal or your expensive rolex will get screwed!

Sad to hear that happened. But I would like to clarify also in case we mislead people. It does not mean that independant watch makers cannot be trusted.

Very unfortunate indeed. Was your friend able to get some form of recourse in making good the watch?

No, no, not saying that for sure.

          that's why I said:

"Not saying that "independent" watchmakers cannot be relied upon, you have to make sure you find a good one!"

Darkangel/Moderator, thanks for pointing that out. I think there are several good, reliable, ex-Rolex technicians in Singapore who are functioning as independents.

Was difficult to get compensation. The watchmaker's response was:

"er, you asked me to service movement but did not ask me to waterproof the watch"

well, could be a case of miscommunication but I thought waterproofing was mandatory every time you service a diver's watch.

... as they say, you get what you pay for. In the end its not only about the dollars and cents... but build relationships with trustworthy watchmakers.

I know one GOOD watchmaker in LP, I hope the person you mentioned is not him....

like all industry there is the good; bad and outright ugly.

you have to do your own footwork in determining who is bad/ugly and who is good. Those who have experience can share, but they can be many factors that may be outside of the watchmaker control.

                          actually dial was damaged

and it is no longer easy to find nice spare 1680 dials.

my trusted watchguy always says 'service not a problem, water resistance not guaranteed, so use at own discretion ya '

pardon me for extra chatty after few beers on a lonely friday nite.

                            I ain't a watch collector.
To me, collector is profound, he/she has to have repeater, tourbillon, perpertual calender etc...
                            I'm just a junk watch accumulator ;-)

moisture in the watch. I think the water is entering thru the bezel area in the pass i also experience this before
