Definitive Tudor Subs

Photo on the left is the Tudor Monte Carlo

The more affordable Tudor which is popular, but less sought after than the MC is the "big bloc" Tudor on the right. The type which is more popular is the one with the black bezel rather than the steel bezel one pictured here. The "big bloc" ones are nice because they come with a rolex crown and their casebacks say something like "caseback by Rolex". The case is also quite solid and thick, hence the name "big bloc".

Taste is something that is very subjective. The prince oysterdate is certainly a safer buy, as you have a good chance of it being liked more universally as it resembles the popular Rolex Submariner.

As for the Monte Carlo, it does have many fans among Rolex collectors but it is one of those pieces which many want to own but very very few want to pay for at current prices. It's like the 6263s and 6265s, I think safe to say many people would like to own one, but how many is able to afford or willing to pay SGD 40k and above for them. I am afraid only the most diehard and serious of Rolex collectors.

Is it worthwhile to pay so much? Only time will tell. I have a friend who collects Ming vases. He was really crazy about those and once bought a piece for 10k Sgd. For most of us, we'll think "crazy" to pay 10k for porcelain ware, right? He bought the vase in 1992, it came with "papers" (I think museum curator papers or something). Then 2 years back, he found that prices had shot up quite a lot and sent it to the auctions. I think it was sotheby's for auction in Paris. Guess what? The piece sold for about SGD 60k! He made good money and used the money to help fund a car - of course he had to top up to buy the car. Of course some people would argue about inflation, shrinking value of money etc but he did make some good money from what looked like a not so wise decision in 1992. So, go and buy more watches and may you find a champion. haha.

Ah yes... Buying vintage is like buying the lottery indeed... Can potential make alot buying and selling...

I am no dealer however, I usually buy what I like to wear and I am unlikely to sell what I buy...

Now looking for black acrylic tudor black sub to complete the family...

Well, collectors buy and sell not because they are dealers, but because they move their pieces to upgrade their collection. So not only dealers sell their watches.

Some collectors just chase for the "fun" and then realise that they either have too many or bought the wrong piece.. Thus trade to move on. Also it is always good to change the collection to keep up the interest.. IMHO

tat is de way of life mah..not many ppl can stay to one or couple of watches for many yrs..most of us will get sick or tired seeing da same watch for yrs..either u sell it to fund a new watch or u bring ur watches to service one by one n see da cost u have to pay..

ps. I just came back from hk, I saw a number of vintage pieces, including the drsd and a couple of tudors in a number of tiny pre-own shops... but didnt dare buy as I didnt know enough on how to distinguish between a fake and real vintage (and non vintage) tudor sub...

Anyone care to share some tips on this?
