I have a 1940 gold filled Rolex Tonneau with an inscription dating it to 1940. The serial number marks the watch being make in 1939 or 1940. I am tracing the previous ownership. The inscription suggests the family was British. The week the watch was presented in September 1940, Buckingham palace had been bombed in London and people were beginning to live in the Tube during air raids. The case back has no hallmarks which were required for a Rolex to be sold in England before and during the war. Hallmarks would also be required if the watch was sold in Geneva....unless, and here is the question: were hallmarks required on gold filled Rolex watches the same as with solid gold ones? Any help would be greatly appreciated.
