  • Rolex oyster precision

    Hi there

I am really new to the forum

I have a rolex watch passed down by my grand dad
i dont know much about Rolex
The only info i have is its Oyster precision 6424

    The watch does look old.
I believe the crown is broken, i cant adjust time, but the second hand is moving

Is it worth it to repair the watch? will they still have spare part for old watches?

    any advice would be great

Erm if I am not wrong, 6424 is manual winding, and if the crown is broken, the watch wouldn't not be able to wind (i.e. the second hand should not be moving...)

You sure you've gotten the correct model?

          Hi
Thank you for the reply, sorry if used the wrong term broken crown. I can wind the watch, but if I pull further to adjust time, the whole thing , crown + the adjusting mechanism comes out. If I fix it back it can wind the watch, just can't adjust time

This is a very small issue. Your winding crown can be fiexd and attach to the gear.

Very small issue, don't worry. Its worth the repair. Your Rolex should be an early Oyster without date. Simple and elegant!

Hi there, thanks a mil for that reply, glad to hear that, yeah the watch is without date, simple and elegant

Can I also ask if I should send to the authorized repair centre for sg listed in Rolex website.
There are others who claim to repair I am not sure if its trustworthy.
Any advice would be great. Another thing the watch doesn't fit me, too tight, I should change the whole bracelet?
I am just confused if I should make the watch wearable for me or repair and sell and get another Rolex . Sorry for the long winded post.

Thanks for clarifying. Welcome to the club!

Of course it is good to send it to RSC (Rolex Service Centre) to repair your watches. However, their price are slightly steeper, and sometimes they may not keep parts for watches that are older than 30 years.

Regarding your second question, you can go to Mr Goh from K2, or his brother (whom I kinda forgot his shop name...), they are relatively cheaper and as trustworthy as well. Many of us (whom I know) goes there to service our watches.

Regarding your third question, it is expensive to purchase the whole bracelet, so I recommend you to buy links from forumers (or from Rolex directly), or you can opt for the leather strap which will look equally good as well (in my opinion.)

It's ok to ask questions in the forum, that's how we learn... In fact I was even more inquisitive when I first join in the forum. HAHAHA

hi. thanks for all the advice

can i ask, in k2 are they able to restore watches?
my dial looks pretty worn, the wordings are faint as well
if they dont, does rolex do that?

You can drop by and ask Uncle Goh. Rolex, I am not so sure. Perhaps some experts might like to advice on this issue?

Hi Rukas, I recommend that you keep the dial as it is. This is how a classic and vintage watch should look like.

Hi, new to this forum too...had a 6694 black dial pass down from my dad...loving the simple look...many commented it looks really old for a middle age guy to put it on....but I juz enjoy the sentimental reason that it was pass down from dad

Quick question, how long does a manual winding last? Does it matter if I wind for a long time and it last longer? This is something I am not sure of.

for manual winding watch, most important is you dont over mind. for automatic watch, there is the slipping clutch to prevent a watch from being over mind. for manual, you have to turn slower and slower as you feel more resistance when winding. more resistance means the watch spring is almost fully coiled up.

thank you for the info...ok dont over mind, will keep that in mind.
Yes, my dad only told me to wind slowly, i do felt resistance at time, but i didnt wanna break that vintage apart, so i only wind afew time that will be able to last me for the day, i got used to adjusting the date/time everytime i intend to put on...
