  • Whats the big deal with the A, M or Z series for GMT2?

I see there seem to be premiums for the different series for GMT2.

    Whats the difference?
    My Humble Collection so far....

    Rolex GMT II 16710
Rolex Oyster Perpetual Date (1500) Jordanian Eagle
    Omega Speedmaster
    Cartier Santos 100 (Ladies)
    Cartier Santos 100 (Men)
    IWC Ingenieur AMG (gone)
    Panerai 112h

    Going for....

    Rolex Daytona SS 116520
    Rolex Submariner 16610 LV
    JLC Master
    Mont Blanc Nicolas Rieussec
    AP ROO... maybe
JLC Gyrotourbillon... if I strike TOTO first prize.

It's quite silly really... fundamentally the same.

A-series(1999/2000) vs Z-series(2006/07): Z-series is a later variant (about 6yrs) with no pinholes Maybe it has a solid end-links compared to earlier A-series (not sure).

M-series(2007/08?) is truly rare. Produced after the announcement it would be discontinued ... and uses the current 3186 movement ... this one is for collectors. Worth it if its a 20-30% premium over the Z-series... but these days it can be as much as double.

And oh - M-series can be current model 116710 . The above refers to the previous 16710.

      Hi,

pardon my ignorance. Which movement was the other GMT2 using (say for the A-D series?

      Thanks.

3185 if i recall correctly. if for a-d series, i believe the mov't changed to allow quickdate adjusting, but the GMT hand was stationary, and one had to move the bezel to offset the time.

All GMT II does allow quick date sets. Only GMT 1 movement allows quick date sets and the movement is totally different!

from what i can gather from my limited knowledge in auto watches, manufacture of a series gmt would be 1998 as opposed to m series which is manufactured in 07. so i guess the older the watch, likelihood of servicing may be required. other than the 3185 and 3186(in M series) think the movements are very robust and would serve the owner for many many years to come.

isnt A series GMT master and not GMT master II. M + Z series were cos some had the 3186 mov't instead of the 3185
