Coming from me who was in a similar situation a few months ago, i would say get the Exp2 cos of the following reasons:
1. PCL bracelet is a scratch magnet on GMT master 2, while Exp2 brushed bracelet wont be tat easy.
2. Rotating bezel or any movable parts will get loose due to wear n tear but Exp2 bezel is fixed, so no worries here.
3. 40mm vs 42mm n if bigger is wat u r after, Exp2 wins here.
I ended up getting my Exp2 after much considerations, n when i finally got it even my wife wants to wear it now!

my 2 cents advise:
if travel alot, buy GMT II.
And also perhaps look at what ya normally wear, ie. formal vs casual and choice of colours like ya have many black tops etc and then consider which one would look more in place...
I personally would be happy with either one but if i were to really choose right now at this very moment, it would be the EXP II, and it has to do with its year of production 2011!sigpic

Point 3 - a 40mm GMT2 actually looks bigger when worn.
suggest that the OP tries both, and picks the one that sings most to him.

Comparing the two, the GMT Master II has some technical improvements over the explorer and the rotating bezel can be useful. It also is a more "impressive" looking watch with the shiny bracelet links and ceramic bezel.
What the Explorer II has got going for it is a base and bracelet better suited for use in harsh environments and a slimmer profile.
Hope it helps.

I also vote for Explorer II
There's a Basel World 2011 pdf from Rolex. Have a look.

Both are excellent watches. I love the new Explorer II but prefer the old GMT Master II.
New Explorer II - latest Rolex movement, 40 years anniversary, 42mm.
Old GMT Master II - Pepsi bezel (love it!), non PCL bracelet which is less prompt to scratches (I am not a carer wearer).
Just my personal view.
