  • Which Rolex to invest?

    Hi Newbie here...

Thinking of investing a Rolex. Has prices come down because of the economic crisis, as more people are parting with their watches?

Which is a good model to buy now?

Saw a GMT Master 2 16710 "U" series, going for $6500 (2nd hand). Was told its discontinued.

    Is this a good buy?
    My Humble Collection so far....

    Rolex GMT II 16710
Rolex Oyster Perpetual Date (1500) Jordanian Eagle
    Omega Speedmaster
    Cartier Santos 100 (Ladies)
    Cartier Santos 100 (Men)
    IWC Ingenieur AMG (gone)
    Panerai 112h

    Going for....

    Rolex Daytona SS 116520
    Rolex Submariner 16610 LV
    JLC Master
    Mont Blanc Nicolas Rieussec
    AP ROO... maybe
JLC Gyrotourbillon... if I strike TOTO first prize.

    Hi Newbie,

You should re-phase your question to "Which Rolex to wear?" It is very hard to earn money from buying and selling watches. Buy it if you like it....

GMT Master 2 U series is more than 10 years old....GMT 2 is such a hot item that I feel the prices have been overinflated. 13 months I bought one of this vintage for low $5000 and you can easily picture the price escalation

In my view, a preown explorer II at about $4,500 is good value for money.

eh. i would say none. if u look across all the sports models modern. prices have already soften during economic downturn.

beginning of 2008, a BNIB daytona is being sold @ 18k for black dial. now? now can get it for ~15k. so is it worth investing?

vintage series have held their value pretty well. but also dipping about ~5%.

for this, it is hard to say.

some people say zenith movement daytona is an iconic piece. i agree. probably the die hard rolex fans and collectors will know the difference between a zenith movement one and a non-zenith movement one.

in the past, i told myself that if i get the daytona, i must get the zenith movement now. after looking @ trying to purchase one for 4 years, i still dont own a daytona.

reason 1- i dont feel it is worth to pay so much for a zenith movement one.

reason 2 - the premium price before the financial downturn was too high a price for me to pay. if one had purchase a daytona during the first quarter of 08, one may had paid up to 18k. look @ the price of a BNIB now. it is ~15k. black dial.

if u really want to get a zenith movement, ask yourself, how much is it worth in your eyes. everyone one of us puts a different value on it. u have to decide for yourself, do you want to part premium pricing for a watch just for this movement? i wont.

Like any investment, its important to do homework first before committing.
ExpII value I believe has been quite stable, other speculation models, prices are very dependant on market and sendiments.

But i feel the most important is to go for a watch that you like!

Agreed that explorer II seems like the best value for money sports model in rolex lineup.

If that is the first rolex u getting..suggest go for a brand new piece from AD..as the economy downturn, most AD in singapore will give a good discount on all models..6.5 for a 2nd hand for me will not go for that..

Not too sure about investment. But I personally think the explorer 2 16570 is totally under valued.2nd hand prices are very reasonable for a 4 hand watch,IMHO. Its basically a GMT master with a non rotatable bezel. If its production stops, it may go the way of the GMT 16710....look at its price now since the ceramic appeared.

Yes. been browsing the M**t*r, and P**s**n website.

The U series comes with box and papers.

You think K series is a better buy?

Thanks all for their replies. Very helpful!
