The Hulk was my very first Rolex. I really, really wanted to get the black SubC, the iconic watch! However, when I saw it in person, I realized that the ceramic bezel didn't do any favors to the black color as it makes it look greyish at certain angles, and even look as if there's a plastic protector on under some lights. But the same attribute worked wonders for the other wise St Patrick's Day Hulk. It gave it personality, which matched up well with that green-gold painted dial. Hence the Hulk.

I thought that would be my first and last Rolex (you can stop laughing now), and shortly after, I itched for that classic black dialed, black bezeled look. Since I already have a Sub, I reckoned the Deepsea would be a perfect match. I really, really, really wanted to like the Deepsea..., and I did, just not on my skinny little 6.5" wrist. It reminded me of the Tag Heuer Monaco Twenty Four watch, a big block of steel awkwardly bobbing about on the wrist. That said, I've seen skinnier folk with even skinnier wrists sport the Deepsea. And suddenly it hit me that, while it is no doubt an engineering marvel, it has departed quite a fair bit from what Rolex dive watches have been known for in the first place, a gentleman's tool watch, a watch that is functional yet civilized. For some strange, unexplainable reason, a wave of sentimentalism overwhelmed me, wanting to have the last of the civilized, understated yet bada** dive watches Rolex made, the good ol' 16600 Sea-Dweller, which I eventually did.

I guess the whole point to all this is there's room for both. Even if you get either one now, very, very soon after, you will find yourself acquiring the other, as they both fill different needs in our male ego... one that supposedly showcases the brawn (though 90% of Deepsea owners never even touched the bottom of their swimming pool yet alone dive in the sea), and the other supposedly showcases our individuality, and having a strong enough personality to carry the green dialed, green bezeled watch. Flip a coin and get one... just make sure you have enough coin$ to get the other shortly after
    superb review....
Only a Rolex will do for me..a tradition passed down from my father and his father..

If I recall when the deepsea was launched, there were MANY ADs who said that the deepsea was unpopular. But somehow, after the advertisement when they showed the watch in the DEPTHS, people's opinion appeared to change... mine certainly did. It's like I wanted to own a small part of that history.

My choice is the deepsea, but only becos I can't carry green.

Prefered the Hulk when I tried both on..DSSD is really clunky. Hulk somehow has more elegance.

Well try both on and bring ur friends along for their opinions...

DSSD was not love at first sight for me. It was clunky and heavy but after looking at it again and again, it really grows on you.

When you understand how much engineering has gone into a quality watch, it is worth every penny you paid for.

The reality is that if you put on biz wear with long sleeve all the time, DSSD is not for you. If you have a casual and rugged style, then it is ok.

As for Hulk, it goes well if you are in the army.

Just kidding. It is a beautiful watch too.

DSSD for me. suits my big hands and you can wear it with anything and if i wouldn't have to think whether it matches with my clothes. when i voted its 66 66. Tie! we need to break this tie and find out which one is the crowds choice.
