  • Explorer , GMT Master or Submariner

hi everyone, im new here. im looking to buy a 2nd hand rolex sports series.

but i dont know which to choose from, like which of the 3 models above.

i know submariner have a very deep water resistance.
but what a bout GMT and Explorer ? both of them have an extra hr hand for 2 time zone? what the different between them.

or any guru here have exprienced like which model is not recommanded as im buying 2nd hand?

    thanks in advance.

I think it boils down more to which model you like most. Unless you are a diver or frequent traveller and will use a ROLEX watch to dive/fly with, else, any of those model you mentioned is the same IMO. And it also does not matter which model you choose as a 2nd-hand piece because they are all good watches.

So this begs only one, single question - which model do you like the most?

i like the green sub! does GMT comes with Green too? haha.
but is GMT waterprof ? normal swimming in the pool/sea is not a problem right ?
i guess i will go with GMT as i travel quite alot, hope its waterprof. haha.

        It's All About You!

The selection of a Rolex watch is a highly subjective process. Watches, like some other possessions, speak volumes about the people owning or wearing them.

Your Rolex should be your choice i.e. your choice of:
        i) style & design
        ii) functionality

Buy the model you like and one that suits your needs, taste and wearing environment.

Whether you are buying a brand new or pre-owned Rolex, choose carefully! Don’t rush into and don’t be rushed into the deal.

        Happy shopping!

I think you have some understandings and others' opinions about the watches. Hope I could offer some more opinions.

Submariner: A diving watch with renowned 3135 caliber, proven and reliable. Only tells date and time. The one-directional bezel allows time taken for deep diving, to prevent over-staying under water.

GMT: A useful travelling watch. The additional GMT hand and bi-directional bezel allow home-based timing and 3rd timezone respectively.

Explorer: I think you are referring to Explorer 2 as only Explorer 2 has similar GMT hand. It serves the same purpose, but as the bezel is engraved permanently, so no 3rd timezone reading.

IMO, I prefer Submariner as it's like a classical and traditional model. But both GMT and Explorer are very useful if you do travel as it allows you to tell both local and home timings. There is no right or wrong. All Rolex watches are good, it only depends which one "smiles" at you! I have no regrets buying Rolex as the quality is good, though not purely handmade. Only thing is buying 2nd hand have to check carefully and may need to send for verification if you afraid it's not geniune. Trust the watch than trust the sellers or shop. If not, pay a bit more to get brand new from AD.

The "green Sub"? I assume you are referring to the Submariner LV - "the Hulk". Then if that's the comparison you are making, there is no ROLEX GMT that is so green that it could match the color of "the Hulk". But the GMT Master II 116710LN does come with a tinge of green, ie the green third (GMT) hand and some small greenish letterings on the dial. As for water resistancy for the purpose of swimming in an enclosed pool and sea (not diving), there is no problem for any GMT models.

In addition to the 3rd green GMT hand for 116710LN, there are also green dial or green date for 116718LN. For 116718LN, there are 2 different Yellow Gold (YG) models, both released for celebrating 50th anniversary for GMT. Either it comes with green dial with gold GMT hand, or black dial with green GMT hand and green date. Both are very nice, but hefty price as it's full YG. No worries about the water resistance. If not wrong, it should substain up to 300 m like Submariner as the new GMT model uses triplock crown like Submariner, though I think it's written waterproof to 100m.

Buy a low entry piece, a used sub to see if you like Rolex? If you discover something you don't like, you can still flog it off to the next person.

Unless you are getting the latest models, the earlier Rolex bracelet takes a bit of getting used to.

Just like one of the bros mentioned, it depends on which watch "smiles" to u.

The explorer first attracted me to rolex watches. As I researched deeper, I found that the submariner would be a better buy due to its strong heritage. When I was about to set my mind on it, I chanced upon the GMT and found that the looks and function glow more to me. I bought the GMT, finally. It depends on individual preference.
