The ROLEX Submariner 16610 is no longer available at most, if not all the ADs. The 116610LN is retailed at $10,640. If you are lucky, a 5% disc may be given.

        Hi guys,

Green horn over here and also a very first post of mine. Currently thinking of getting either 116610LN Dial black or the GMTII? Just wondering which one is more popular or should i say it's just own preference???

Both are equally popular. It's personal preference, I'll say.

When I was looking for my first rolex, I was also looking into these 2 watches. In the end I settled for the 116610. Why? Because I read up on the history of both watches and the Submariner is really an iconic watch with a beautiful history. Well, GMT also got its colorful history but i have grown more in love with the Submariner. And I used to dives too. So got the Submariner and really love the watch. Just sharing here.

116610LN for me, especially with the new coil and all, definitely a step up in terms of performance.

Just get both... Lol. Sub and GMT are iconic Rolex models - I don't think you can really choose between the two other than through personal preference.

I hope this is not too late.

I would opt for the 16610. Personally, the 116610 is too 'bling' - where the bezel is concern - compared to the 16610 which is more nondescript. And this is important for sport watches. If I want a Rollie which screams, I would choose the DJs or two-tone sports series.

And in furthurance to Caleb77's post, if you are keen on the 16610, my D-series is available. I'm letting it go for a Red Sub.

                          What's the diff between a red sub and a 16610 or 116610?
                          Any special functions?

Let me try to answer your question; and if I'm wrong, may the forum correct me. Here goes:

Red Sub was allocated with the reference no. 1680 and was the first Subs that incorporated a date function. It is believed to be produced from 1966 to 1973; with the earlier models having the word 'Submariner' written in red and then, later, in white. It is now considered a vintage watch and has achieved a cult status so to speak in the world of vintage Subs because of the red print.

In 1988/1989, Rolex released the Sub Date ref. 16610 which is powered by the tried and tested Rolex Caliber 3135 automatic winding movement and generated 28,800 vibrations per hour (vph).

In 2010, the 16610 was replaced by the current 116610. It boasted of a scratch-resistant ceramic bezel and an updated bracelet with the Glidelock claps. It is also powered by an updated Rolex Caliber 3135.

In terms of function, you can go diving or swimming with the 16610 and the 116610. I would not do so with the Red Sub though.

Think you missed out the parachrom bleu hairspring, maxi dial, upsized case (lugs and crown guards) and a higher price tag

Bro, i have both 16610 and ceramic sub. Ok, all the new improvements to the ceramic sub aside, just purely on aesthetics and face looks alone, i find the 16610 sub more balanced, whereas the ceramic sub had lugs that were thicker, and hence more "squarish" look. If you like a rounder look, go for 16610. If you like a square look, go for ceramic sub.

I sold my ceramic sub, cause the square look just did not look right to me. But thats just me...
