  • 50th Anniversary Submariner vs Daytona

    Hi guys,

I really need help in deciding between these 2. Unfortunately, I can get only 1...

    1) A BNIB "plastic intact" 50th Anniversary Submariner (Flat 4, not sure if it's a Y or F series) - $9,800

    2) a pre-owned F series Daytona - $12,800

I can't make up my mind....argh....as to spend close to $10k, I might as well get a Daytona right ? But a BNIB 50th Anniversary Submariner (Flat 4) is really rare to come by.....pls help.

    Thanks.

there is probably 1-2k price difference between a Y/F series between other series. there is probably about 2k or more price difference between a Y/F series plastic intact and one without.

also does the Y/F series comes with box and papers? does it come with the anniversary booklet?

how do you define BNIB? to me BNIB = not worn before. no dings, very minimum hairline scratches due to handling not due to wearing. BNIB = complete set also?

if i buy the submariner, it would probably be used for flipping exercise. honestly, normal people wont be able to tell you if the sub you wearing is a Y/F series without seeing the serial. then again, can i put a flat 4 bezel on say a Z series and claims that it is a rare piece? rolex is not going to authenticate such information. it is because people who is into rolex notice that this bezel insert comes with certain production, this dial comes with this production, etc. but is there a official word from rolex that says so?

what i am trying to put across is why pay above market rate for this watch you are looking at. i am not telling you that you should or should not buy. you need to know why you are buying this watch. once you have the reason you will be able to tell yourself to buy or not.

F series daytona for 12800? i think pay about 1k more you get a more later production with paper. pay about 1.5K more you get a later production with box and papers. F series is probably ~10 years old. for that price, i would factor in servicing cost as well

Thanks to fellow bros out there for advice. Sometimes when you are longing for somethings, you tend to be blinded...therefore I always like to take 1-2 days to reflect & ask for opinions first.

          Thanks agn.

Yeah, I've read that some mths back & kept that link. Thanks anyway.

              That's why I'm quite excited especially if it's a Y series.

On the flat 4 sub lv. Rolex did not officially marketed anything on mark 1 dial or flat 4. If you look at the black sub made during that period, you could find those flat 4 bezel as well. I would choose the daytona in view of the high cost to acquire the sub lv.

You buy to wear or buy to keep? The LV Y series in BNIB is only good to keep. Wear it, scratch the bezel or watch and your 9.8k will go down quite a bit (quite high to start off).

If you intend to wear, then the used Daytona makes more sense.

Yeah, after much thought, it's too much for a sub, even if it's a Y series & as bro KuchingKu said, it's probably to keep it for show. I think I'm leaning towards a Daytona now after hearing all the fellow bros opinions.

                    Thanks alot !
