    SeaDweller4000.jpg

the sea dweller is the lesser appreciated diving watch compared to submariner. the sea dweller was revealed during 2014 basel. however as quickly as it is launched, it has been removed from the rolex website after 2017 basel.

a 3 year span for a sports model is considered short. is it as rare as its predecessor A series sea dweller (16660)?

today at one of the local AD, there are 3 pieces retailing at ~$13990.

i like the sea dweller because there is the presence of date without cyclops.

will this model - 116600 achieve cult status? i wait with bated breath.

Well, it may reach "cult status" like its predecessor - 16660. Or it may not. Even if it does, how long do you predict it to being "cult status"? Is 5 years a good prediction? Or maybe, 10 years? I won't bet on it.

what is the expected timeline? how long did it take for the great white to reach cult status? there are many factors that will affect whether the watch will reach cult status.

The more people think that it will not reach cult status now, the better it is for collectors. Looking back at Rolex's history, it has suggested that those watches that eventually rose in value the most after being discontinued are the ones that were unpopular when they were in production - e.g. Daytona, Explorer 2 etc.

Agree. There are many factors that will contribute to a model's success. And these factors are all determined mainly by the watch company, in this case, ROLEX. It is still anybody's guess and mind you, not all models within the same 'family line' got successful. Look at the Explorer 1 (14270 & 114270); Explorer II (16570); Submariner (16800 & 16610). Are these models discontinued? How long have each been discontinued? Are they 'cult status' or potential 'cult status' calibers?

The older Explorers, yes. How old is the Explorer 1016 already? What about the Steve McQueen 1655? These are probably 'cult status' models. But what happened to their later batches? What about the Submariners 1680 and 16800? Same popularity? Will the 16610 follow the 1680 footsteps?

understand that the last batch of rolex 116600 was released couple of weeks ago.

                supply is now limited.

i forsee that this piece will be a sought after piece in the future for 1 reason

the only sea dweller with ceramic bezel with less than 3 year production. come to think of it, it is also the first ceramic bezel (sports model) that is discontinued.

Well, whatever the speculation is, let's hope this model reaches cult status sooner than later, and becomes very sought after within these few years.
