Why pay extra for SS daytona when you can get a TT daytona?

Agree with you, as time past SS is going to be as common as any other Rolex model, and it's rarity will be put to test. As I observed, SS preowned set is easily available in the market, n is selling below retail price, so why would I want to pay premium for it now? I would rather get a TT for long run as I felt it is more value for money. That is my thought.

So these people get half gold , but problem is tt look is 'not here not there' , some gold some steel
And look old fashion too, like for older generation
younger generation may prefer ss, look more youthful n timeless, and cleaner too

is it a situation of really no stock by the AD or they are holding out for better pricing or is it that Rolex is controlling stock to market it?
now, you can get daytona easier compared to the past, as such the premium paid has gone down. in the past, daytona may cost like 11k, but can be sold as high as 17k. premium is 6k. now cost is like 12K, but can only be sold like 15k, premium is 3k.
also, in the past, there are not many gray dealers bringing watches. now there are more. also with the rise of use of internet, buyers being more aware of market situations, stock availability etc contribute to the change in prices.
it is simple economics - demand and supply. low supply, high demand, price increase. high supply, low demand, price decrease.
Originally posted by ThrottleDefinitely not rare but in high demand, so most of the time, it's out of stock. (i'm an old man so always talk about the past
my experience is prior2007.)
Prior to 2007, You will not be able to get on at the AD without paying at least $5k above RRP simply becos someone would already have.
I bought my Daytona from Watch Palace in 2006 and i scour every AD in Singapore for it.
Hour Glass , Tai Honghung, Dickson etc quoted in excess of $18k and they had nothing on hand.
But in recent years (last 5-7 year) Rolex has produced many more SS Daytonas to feed the market so there's no longer a situation of out of stock, it's a situation of paying above RRP so that you get it before someone else does. But there really is no need to do it anymore. the ss daytona is no longer difficult to come by due to higher production numbers and for that matter, prices have come off. Dealers outside switzerland like to play punk....
Too bad for me. Should have bot it when i was working in Switzerland more than 10 yrs ago.....
By the way, my close buddy got it from Bucherer (i think) in Geneva at RRP about a year ago.

I share your frustration... Sort of...
Since around 2001 been asking THG... No stock... Asked him what's the mkt, willing to pay $18k if that was the case then... Still, no stock... Meanwhile bot or recommended quite a few deals to the SA...
Fortunately.... end 2008, thru a Sincere SA, showed me the way to an amazing deal... Local AD selling at slightly below RRP , which few believed was true
The diff was enuf for me to get an IWC Portuguese Chrono pre owned
BTW, ditched the THG SA!
Originally posted by ThrottleFor my case, when i was buying, it was a case of no stock at hourglass, dickson, taihunghong etc...
I simply walked in and asked for the watch. they quote price, i said ok but they said currently dont have.
Me: hi, how much for an SS daytona with black dial (116520)
hourglass: $18,500
Me: ok i would like to view it now and buy
Hourglass : er, sorry, thats the price but currently no stock. Would you like to leave name and number
Me: nevermind, thanks
In the end, i bought at watch palace for $17,800.
Preown one was sold by passion for $16,500.
Those were the days....
Sigh lose money so i treat my Daytona like a G-shock now... Up mountain down ocean
Moreover i chipped the sapphire crystal and jammed the chrono button in 2010 so sent to RSC for servicing for $1000++.
Hahah.... Total $18,800
Whose SS Daytona black dial is more expensive then mine? Kee chiu!

Looking at what some people pay for HDB and 99yr apts, i would say my $18k Daytona mistake is something i can accept happily.
