  • What would be a good first Rolex?

I have been collecting watches for about 10 years now and own/owned around 15 pieces (including those that were sold) along the way, but never a Rolex!

I found out this site recently and has gotten the Rolex poison and have short listed the GMT-Master II, Sea-Dweller, Daytona and Submariner (in that order) as options for my first Rolex.

Which do you think would be a good first Rolex to complement my current collection?

Note: I am planning to sell the JLC Amvox1 and think that one of the black dial Sports Rolex will be a nice replacement...?

Also, I am offered the following from my AD (with stock, any payment mode):
    - $15.5k for white dial Daytona
    - $17k for black dial Daytona
    - $9.3k for GMT-Master II
    - $8.5k for Sea-Dweller
    - No stock for Submariner

Let me know your thoughts on the selection and pricing as well, many thanks.
BTW, why is the black dial Daytona more costly? Is it solely due to demand/supply or are they made in smaller quantity compared to the white dial ones?

per my understanding, cost difference between black/white face daytona is market driven. more demands for black face, so it is more expensive, but seems that black face preference is only an asian trend.

personal preference, black face daytona (but whether u wan to pay the 1.5K more just for that is subjective) and sub, dweller is alittle thick on the wrist, but again that is subjective to your wrist size ( doesn't fit mine) GMT face just doesn't call to me (no offence to the GMT lovers)
Don't trust anyone too much, even your own shadow leave you when you are in darkness.

if you are intending to let go your JLC Amvox1, check with wolfeyes74, he is interested.

      ok.

there is stock for sub date. going for list.

will it be just 1 rolex or multiple rolex?

      is date a must?

personally, the daytona is consider the holy grail. however, one of my 'religion' is must have date. if u purchased the daytona, believe me, soon u will be getting SD, sub date, GMT, etc.

if you intend to own multiple rolex, and must be brand new, then get the SD first. cause no longer in production. follow by whichever u like, sub date, GMT II or daytona.

Yes yes... you're right! Sub SS!! Nice for first rolex!!!

At least there is room for improvement, if first rolex is a daytona, you will not bother buying "cheaper" models like GMTIIc, Sub, etc....

            So, 1st rolex - Sub, 2nd rolex - GMTIIc, then finally get a 116520...

                  Thanks for all the advices.

I am not sure if this will be my only Rolex....I guess you can never be sure. I also realise that date is very important for me, but I am not accustomed to cyclops. Probably the SD would be ideal for me? But is SD the poor cousin of Submariner? Anyway I need to pay my AD a visit to try if its thickness is okay for me.

I also like Patek, but don't find their current SS pieces interesting (to me). I would get the 5146/1A IF there is one, the 5146/1G is just too expensive for me, the WG bracelet alone cost more than $30k. I always regretted not to get the 5085/1A when it was still available. It was selling much lower than retail too then, which is kind of rare for a SS Patek.

But I find the 37mm case too small for me... PP 5960 has a bigger case.. nicer... $30k for a W/G bracelet??? That's many many many leather strap replacements.....

5960 is very nice, unconventional use of the 'bull-eyes' for the chrono counters instead of using the more common sub-dials, but it is out of my reach.

The difference between the 5146G & 5146/1G is $30k and 5146G get to keep the leather strap with deployant as well.

                      Any thoughts on the SD?

ROLEX's trademark is the cyclop so yes, coupled with your need for date, you do not have many choices. If you like the sports models, SD is the only one left.

                          Happy shopping!
