re: GMT II ... prior to the 116710, there was the 16760 "Fat Lady" and later 16710 ... both had different movements. Is this what the discussion was about?

On another note , check out Watch Palace in lucky plaza for the AirKing . Their prices are suppose to be quite good, and lots of stock. I saw a few airkings a few weeks ago.

Agree on what some of the forummers already said about the 16700. It's not that practical compared to the 16710. Only advantage is that the date on the 16700 has a quick-set feature. Disadvantage is that you cannot independently adjust the hour hand (most modern GMT watches can do that).

That said, if you're looking for a 16700, please get the late U or A series with the luminova dial (somehow these are more desirable). The best version (in my opinion) is the A series with only "SWISS" at the bottom of the dial. That version also comes with the double clasp bracelet.

wonder why Rolex come out with so many different movement for the same model of watch.

honestly what significant different does it make to man on the street like moi who simply just wanna get a Rolex watch for its status symbol or watsoever reasons..

Is it some form of marketing gimmick to justify the reason to hike the price (well, not as if Rolex need any reason though...hee)

well, subtle changes that accompanied with inflation of epic proportions are lil hard to stomach, rite?

with regards to your question: it's anybody's guess.

                            hi evets,

U r nt wrong thre but ROLEX can't b selling to just a quarter of the international population (ie. te "man on the streets") rite? Thre r still othr sectors of the population that they want to target, like those watch aficionados/serious collectors.

unlike many brands, rolex is generally more conservative and believe in introducing changes evolutionarily. ... so one model can see subtle changes over many years.

Ironically, it is this slowness which partially accounts for its demand. It's predictable. Contrast this with Omega with its myriad number of variations... which holds more value in the long term?

Between movements there are usually some improvements - its more a question if you bother to go read up and compare the differences.

The most recent example is the parachrome spring in the new models. These springs don't get magnetized, which is a problem all mechanical watches faced.

BTw, the 16700 and 16710 have very different movements. The 16700 is a quick-set date without decoupled hour-hand for changing timezone. The 16710 can decouple the hour hand to change timezone and uses two cycles to change date (a bit leh-cheh). I believe the 16710 was the first GMT watch in the world to be able to do so...
and in so doing, became the first GMT watch to be able to track 4 timezones (or was it 3?).
