Gmt used to be a tool watch.... when the cerachrome gtmc 2 came out with the polished middle linked, it lost a bit of its tool watch heritage. Now with the full white gold pepsi, it is 100% lost in translation......

      Rolex as a decorative piece?

Well.. you are right in a way dude.. guess you are not the first to raise concern over this fact.

However, looking from Rolex's perspective, they have to improve or at least, catch up with time, given that having a watch is no longer a need but rather, a want. Checking out time nowadays is probably as easy as ABC since it is widely and easily available, e.g our smartphone. And a smartphone does not need C.O.S.C certification, and does not adhere to the minus 4 plus 6 rules.. it beats Rolex anytime of the day to the seconds!

"Decorative" pieces of jewelries rather than tool watches

To add-on to the previous post, one can see that they are moving towards producing watches that act as "decorative" pieces of jewelries rather than tool watches. And being a profit-driven company like all other large corporates, their aim is to drive sales and make money for the company, and not to worry about collectability, functionality, etc etc etc.

Looking at the 50th Anniversary pieces such as full solid gold GMT Master II and Daytona white gold, you will know what I mean...

          gmtsub

Found this thread started by someone whose nick is gmtsub here...

Interestingly, he asked whether Rolex will ever produce a GMT Pepsi C (C for Ceramic of course! ) and as usual, there were detractors to his thread..

Seems prophetic now taking a retrospective look at his thread

The era where Rolex or any other brands need to produce tool watches have passed, they have all been elevated to luxury status so it's only natural their aesthetics reflect that. While we may lament the loss of the tool heritage, we should embrace its new luxury status. As a bro earlier mentioned, watches these days are pretty much decorative.
