  • Expecting "Submariner II" & "Daytona II"

Why there is no"Submariner II" & "Daytona II" ??

Since there is DD II, GMT II, Explorer II and YM II.

If Rolex launch Submariner II & Daytona II, how will the market respond & react ?

Will the resale value of pre-own models sustain ?

Maybe for those who consider to get one but don`t know which one. This is the "ONE".

Those who bought brand new recently, how they feel ?

As usual, folks will rush to secure stocks during launch, ADs will sell at a premium initially. Prices will soften when supply stabilise etc

Buyers if existing subs and daytonas feel sore etc.

If you look back at Rolex history, they only do a "II" when they have doubts on the original model and want to hedge their bets. We saw this with the GMT (24 hour hand) and GMT II (Independent GMT hand), as well as with Explorer (the plain jane everest icon) and Explorer 2 (with 24 hour hand for cave explorers).

I'm sure they were dying to do the same for the Submariner, but it was what most people associate the Rolex brand with, and in short, the Submariner was and always will be, the Rolex icon. So instead of doing a Submariner II, what did they do? The Sea-Dweller So your so-called Submariner II has been in existence for a long, long time. Just go buy a DSSD and you have a Submariner II, and Rolex gets to keep its icon undiluted.

As for the Daytona, contrary to their cult-like popularity today, the manual wind models were a complete disaster back then. So there wasn't even a question whether to launch a "II" in parallel to their existing manual wind models. It was a clear discontinue-and-relaunch approach in the '80s with the 16520 Zenith Daytonas. And since the rebooted Daytona has now pretty much become an icon similar to the Submariner, there is no need for Rolex to dilute the brand with a "II".

And of course, the simplest indicator for Rolex whether a "II" is needed is revenue. Plain and simple. As long as the sales numbers are climbing YoY, there is absolutely no need whatsoever to mess with its icons. Hope this explains
