Compared to the DD, the DD2:

1. Has great wrist presence - looks and feels more substantial (30% to 35% heavier with solid gold) befitting the DD's President tag. The heft of solid 18k is what makes the DD2. The DD feels and looks "toyish" in comparison.

2. Is more masculine with 41 mm - Rolex is starting to position the 36 mm models to be a feminine size beginning with the DJ's 36 mm floral dial. In the recent Australian Open, Rolex was aggresively promoting Roger Federer wearing the 41 mm DJ2, and Caroline Wozniacki (currently womens' #1 ) the 36 mm DJ.

3. Is more versatile - the DD was touted as a "dress" watch but the DD2 looks as good in a tux in a grand ball as it would in faded jeans in a flea market.

4. Is more value as an investment or as a heirloom - no contest, grab the DD2. I predict a sharp fall in preowned DD prices as more DD2s hit the preowned markets. The ADs mainly stock the DD2s now. What does that say?

I would say that the DD2 feels rather oversized than the DD. If you are comparing the latest DD 36mm, 118238 and equivalent series, they have a solid end link bracelet, thicker case and lugs...it's not at the least toyish but I feel the perfect size.

DD2 hasn't been very popular, many of my DD fan friends do agree that DD2 is oversized and DD is the ideal size. For the DD2 to go into the resale market it will take awhile, for it to overtake the DD...it will take an even longer while.

Will DD prices drop? That we never know...but my opinion...nope. It will stay strong.

oversized is one thing. whats worse is that rolex kept the dial size the same, and put the bezel/case on steroids making the watch disproportional

Having own both the DD and DD2 before , IMHO , the DD2 does look abit disproportional , But the feeling on wrist is really great , especially its full solid gold weight .
I'm too used to heavy and big watch , although i find the DD to be nicer but i will still go for the DD2.

If I wanted a big size gold Rolex, i'd just get a gold sports model (and I did), I wont be bothered with DD2 which looks totally disproportionate, reeking of a marketing gimmick similar to many weird looking DJs currently .

I agree with bro throttle here, big bling watches are nice for gold sports models, like the 18K GMT, 18K subs and Daytonas are nice big and bling. my favourite being the 18K GMT, overall more masculine, handsome, macho in appearance

For dress watches , I prefer the timeless classic beauty of a 36mm DD on president bracelet, still the flagship of Rolex dress watches since its birth in 1956.

In the past 50 years, watch trends have gone from big to normal, then really tiny, then to really big again for now.... in another 10 years it will be back to tiny watches again because the teens are now wearing big watches and in 10 years when they grow up, they will feel big is old fashion and vintage .... but above all else the 36mm remains unchanged for half a century and stood the test of time.....

It all depends on size of wearer. 36 is more versatile as a dress watch, good enough for Asian male wrist and also for ladies, but may look wierd on a big man w big wrist. 41 gold looks more appropriate for sports series n dd2 probably better suits a 6ft male with bigger wrist. Will 36 dd drop in value?? At least it has the Asian male and females mkt whereas 41 can only capture the big size makes mkt. big size watch trend may reverse one day, no one knows.

The 11823X series Day Date 36 mm comes with a domed sapphire crystal that gives the dial a special depth. It is also available in smooth bezel and Oyster bracelet with hidden clasp option.

The 21823X series Day Date II has a flat sapphire crystal, and only the president bracelet is available. The smooth bezel is available only on the platinum model. The Day Date II movement is also the updated movement with add on Paramagnetic blue hairspring and Paraflex shock absorber.

Sold my dd, got the dd2 and never look back since.
