Only one thing....You would lose money irrespective either you buy new or old. That is unless you play in high end limited edition pateks with complicated movements.

hence my two cents....buy what you love. New or old dosnt matter..it should make you happy...give you a sense of fulfillment and joy. everytime you wear you should get a sense of accomplishment. dont limit yourself to second hand .......buying experience matters to a lot of us. You must experience that atleast one. for other occasions you have this reliable forum to buy and sell.
