I am a newbie here and have several questions with regards to buying a Rolex watch

I am saving up to buy either a submariner (if there is a new model this year at baseworld) or a Deepsea.

    Questions:

    1) Is The Hour Glass an Rolex Authorise Dealer? Is it a good place to buy a Rolex?

Yes, THG is ROLEX's AD. Yes, a good place to buy. No super discount though.

    2) What is the Rolex's warranty like? Does it cover parts and labour?

Two years' international warranty. Not too sure about parts and labour.

    3) What do I have to look out for when buying a new rolex?

Nothing much except being conscious of price and discount. Buy what you like.

    4) Does the AD check all Rolexes to ensure that it is in perfect condition in every expect before selling it?

IMO, no. Better for you to check / double-check.

    Thank you for your time.

    You are welcome.

    Hope this helps.

Thank you for the quick reply.

When I check the rolex itself, what do I have to look out for?

Basically just ensure that it's a brand new piece...i.e. all protective stickers are intact....and also look out for any scratches/dings/etc....just to be safe....

but most importantly...buy what you like and wear it in good health...

Bro nottinghill has given you important pointers. I'd only like to add base on my personal encounters. Firstly, see that the cyclop (if your choice comes with it) is aligned centrally against the date. I've seen slanted. Secondly, no "pubic" hair in the case..haha.. I've seen a Submariner with a very tiny, baby hair in the case, sold at THG .

          So, gd luck !

yup agree with bro oceanklassik...cos sometimes.... i have come across new rollies with slight mis aligned cyclops... or the bezel insert does not coincide directly with the 12 o'clock marker..... so it's really important to study the watch closely before paying the dough...

              thanks for the info.

is there any way to check the movement of the watch itself?

or i just make sure it tick 1 time for each second?

if I see something I dont like about the watch, can I tell the AD to bring me another one to inspect?

the AD cannot say no rite?

Yes, you gotta bring it to RSC (ROLEX Service Centre) to do the inspection at a fee.

or i just make sure it tick 1 time for each second?

Don't think it works in this manner.

Yes, if only they have the stock.

the AD cannot say no rite?

Yes, you are the customer and making reasonable request.

                Happy shopping.

why would you wanna check movement?

bascially buying a watch also depends on a bit of luck. it's like buying electronic goods e.g. lcd tv or an ipod, when will it conk out? no one knows for sure but as long as it comes with warranty, any manufacturing are covered.

I recall an ex-colleague who bought a mazda 3 but only to send the car for servicing the following day.

go to www.rolexforums.com and read abt some of the grouses on new rollies. some of the defects are so glaring but yet, one cannot fathom how it got thru the rolex QC.

what u can do is to buy a loupe or a magnifying glass and scrutinise the watch that u intend to buy. if there is a certain irate tat catches yr eye, ask for another one. if nothing catches yr fancy, just walk out of the shop. it's yr money and it's not a small amount by any standards.
                  Remnants of my irresponsibility:
                  "Foreign affections"
                  1) Sinn U1-30 June 2007
                  2) Rolex Sea-Dweller 16600 M series-23 Jan 08 (HER perpetual oyster )
                  3) Omega Seamaster Chrono Diver 2225.80.00-25 Jul 08 (From Wife )
                  4) IWC Top Gun Chrono-20 Sep 09
                  What's NEXT?

will the Rolex service centre open up the rolex to check its movement?

how much is the checking fee?

Upon a customer's request (ie. you), yes. IIRC it is $75.

                                Some Rolex questions

                                Hi,

                                Morning to all.

I have 2 questions, though I afraid it may have been posted.

                                1) May I know how many links are there on a brand new Rolex 16600 SeaDweller? I am looking at a pre-owned piece now, so wanna know the exact contents of the watch.

                                2) What are the previous versions of GMT-Master II? I mean the older 16710 and before. What are so-called "Fat Lady" etc?

                                Appreciate your reply. Thanks.
