+1 on that. I also have both brands and they are meant for different occasions/outfit/mood.

The only issue i used to have with Pam is the usage of the ETA movements and charging an arm and leg for it. That said, I still bought a Pam 111 which is ETA-based but subsequently traded up for a 351 which has an inhouse movement.

    • Having owned both pam and rolex, both are uniquely in their own way. Pam is a dressy watch not for those Kopitiam uncles. I won't feel good wearing a same brand as a Kopitiam uncle.

The uniqueness of a pam allows for one to change the way it look through strap changing. Everytime a strap is changed, viola, u have a different watch.

Most importantly, buy what you can afford and wear it in good health. Rolex is getting too common for the main masses anyway. Walk around in the shopping centres during weekends and most Toms and Harrys are wearing a rolex. Be it sport or uncle rolexes. Getting too common nowadays.

        1. To me, PAM is too gaudy as a dress watch. When I think of a dressy watch, thin and classic comes to mind, say a PP Calatrava or a JLC Reverso, or even a Piaget Altiplano.

        2. Changing a strap on a PAM is just like changing your iphone cover. Once the novelty wears off, it's still the same freaking watch.

        3. Rolex has always been very common, not just only nowadays.... Guess you are just only a young chap huh!

@abating, true on point 2. It's still the same freaking watch, at least the shiok factor is there.

On your point 1, it's your personal view. To others it may not be the same.

On point 3, you also agreed Rolex is common. I only start noticing recently where ever I looked, there's a Rolex. On fat dudes, on handsome guys or average joe.. See already also sian..

& your guess is wrong, I'm not a young chap. However I will take it as a compliment.

End of the day, be it a Rolex or Pam.. Love what you have in your collection. There are others who want but don't have.

            • Other than the fact that it has no real heritage, oversized, still uses ETA movements, not independent and that it's a brand that you buy just for the sake of being "different", Panerai is alright.

Other than the fact you are in rolex forum posting this and not in paneristi forum, I guess you are all right. Lol 😁

                • I love PAMs for their iconic look as I dislike models that are generic looking. The problem is that I am a sucker for in-house movements but I cannot convince myself to spend that kind of money for an in-house PAM when I can spend the same amount of money to buy a Rolex or in-house Breitling and have some money left. I only like the exterior look but don't like the look of their movements. Even though most have transparent casebacks but you cannot see much of the movement components inside because they are still pretty much covered up. Don't really like the finishing of their movements too. I cannot also justify paying more for a watch with leather straps because I prefer SS bracelets that I feel are tougher and more versatile for daily use. As for their sizes, well, big size is Panerai's signature because their watches are meant to be worn outside the sleeves for military use where legibility is crucial. Therefore I will go for their bigger sizes as long as my wrist can take.

I don't really agree that PAMs are more for younger generations because I have seen older people wearing them and thought they look good on them. Just that the older generations were not well exposed or introduced to other brands in the olden days other than Rolex. So that's why we see most uncles and aunties wearing Rolex. However when our generation eventually grows old and eventually becomes the "pioneer" generations, I believe we will see a different trend with more different brands on old folks' wrists.

                  • Everyone buys the watch they like and can afford to, there really is not right and wrong. I love Panerai design but they are simply too big on my wrist and too expensive for my budget. Also being grown in the 80's it was the Rolex that was the watch to get.

                    • I think PAM prices are dropping based on the BNIB prices put up for sale in the sales forums.
I think the demand is not really big nowadays. Most of my friends, relatives are all interested in Rolex only. Sorry, no offense to Pam owners.

                      • I love my 372. It's the watch that gets people want to talk to you about watches.

But without a blink if there is day I have to pick to keep only 1 watch. That will be my subC.

                        • Both have its own appeal. I have 2 pams before I started to like Rolex. Reason being Rolex is more appealing than the pam.

                          • Seen a few around .not put any through the paces as found long ago most watches cant handle what I put them through . for me rolex meets the standards then some .

If you like the pan get it world would be boring if everyone and everything was the same . what works for one person doesnt always work for others .
