  • Upgrading Explorer II to GMT2C

It’s been awhile posting at ROC again, Brought 2 of my watches all thru this forum
Now got new target so getting opinion for all experts again.
Though my Explorer II is the 1st Rolex that spark the watch poison in me everyday it seems to look smaller after I brought my PAM 44m. So I was thinking to upgrade it to the GMT 2c which look slightly more macho.
So my concern is my 8.0/10 daily wear Explorer II Blk (BTW is Y series) is quote only around $4~$4.4k to take in.. and now that GMT C2 is retail at 9.5k+ I need to top up 5k for a model that has almost the same function..
So what do you guys think? BTW Deepsea & New Explorer II (42mm) is out as it don’t look appealing to me lei..
Or any lobang for better price to sell of my current Explorer II?

Win win, better than let preown shop earn

          i would say dont upgrade.

it seems that the reason why you are looking to upgrade is more of looks rather than functionality. one of the major difference in terms of functionality is that the explorer II can only tell 2 time zones while the GMT is able to 3 time zones due to the rotating bezel.

since you already have a PAM that is 44mm, it should look macho enough on your wrist. there is no need to 'upgrade' for the sake say case thickness and case width.

by having a PAM and a explorer II, you have best of both worlds. the pam is sometimes difficult to carry off on certain occasions due to its thickness. this is where the explorer II comes in.

more important, economy does not look good. save the 5k and spend it on your basic needs.

does not necessary be a win-win situation. why?

if you sell it to a preown shop, it can be more hassle free. the shop authenticate the watch, check the condition. inform you the price and seller is ok with price. take money and put inside pocket.

if you sell it on your own, first have to advertise, then sometimes seller needs to answer the same questions repeatedly. then got potential buyer say on, but last min pull out of deal because of whatever reasons. then have to go back and start from step 1. then have to attend to various queries, need to answer them politely even though seller feels frustrated.

bottom line is sell to pre own shop got advantage and disadvantage, sell on own also have advantage and disadvantage. seller has to weigh the options and decide which path to choose.

then you must be a lucky watch seller that has never been offered a price lower than preown shops.

preown shop offer price is lower than that of a private buyer, the reason is because they may/may not have to touch up/ repair the watch. they have to hold on the watch till there is a ready buyer. for at least these 2 reasons, the offered price by preown shop is usually lower compared to private buyer.

a potential buyer pays more if buying a watch from preown shop compared to private seller is due to the preown shop needs to cover rental. whether or not it is exorbitant depends on how one sees it. do not forget that if anything goes wrong with a watch, you can still go back to the shop and seek assistance. whether or not the shop entertains you is another aspect. but if buy from private seller, anything wrong, buyer is left to own devices.

Seller get more than pathetic offers by preown shop
Buyer pay less than exorbitant asking price by preown shop

You ask any preown shop if they will go rsc to verify with you
They will tell you go buy new watch from ADs

You like this say...all the shop eat air liao. Property agent, used car dealers also can eat air.

Like triton mentioned. Pros and cons for both ways. Price is not the only consideration. Some of the frustration and time wasted dealing with nonsense time wasters....I rather sell cheaper by few hundreds to preown shop!

As you already pointed out.... it's a 5k upgrade. Even you sell yr Explorer II for better price, there is still a few K gap between your Explorer II and the target GMT2c.

My view is that you do it only if you are prepared to breach that gap .

And hey, I dun even have an ExplorerII.... mine is 6694 nia. Looks miniature beside my Pam, but it slips nicely under my long sleeve cuff. As bros said above, you have best of both world liao!
                    I'm in bad company........

                        Agree with Bro Triton..............

Sometime is better to sell to shop.

To me a dealer quote a Y series at 4-4.4k without looking at the watch is already a good price.

Our low-baller ROC 'DEALER' even worse!!!!!!!

I was offer by a very good bro here at 3.8k for my K series exp 2(black)
