Damn looks like we are all in the same companies. We all need to seek permission to buy watch... What the hell man. I want to buy a five matches watch for my senior and my CO nag the hell out of me. I eventually bought it and she turned the table. It took me one hell of a patience to sweet-talk her out of it.

Man, everytime I buy a watch, I need to buy her share too. If not, she would ask why spend money on myself and not on her. But what the heck, I bought her Tiffany & Co jewellaries, Prada bag, LV bag and Coach bags. Worst is that she dun even use or wear it and it all collecting dust... Next time if I want to buy a watch for myself, her condition is to get her either a Channel bag or Cartier medium Ballon Bleu. If I have not spend all that money on her, I could have gotten a fine swiss time piece.

Next if we want to buy anything, just buy and pretend it a gift. And never let them know how much we have in the bank!!!

if you are buying things for her, it is better to check what she likes. no point buying what she dont want.

if it is collecting dust, there is more reasons to explain to her why a watch is better.

Personally don't recommend that you buy first as that may show that you don't respect her. In turn, this can result in you being in hot soup. Personally, I don't think it's due to the fact that she's an accountant. It might have to do with the way she was brought up. Perhaps you might try explaining to her that this watch is really something that you like and you have been eyeing this for quite a while. Further explain that you do not have any other expensive hobbies and what you want to get here is just a slight indulgence to reward yourself after all the years you've been out there in the jungle. Life is short. It's true that money is important but what exactly are we saving for? The next generation? We don't want to overly pamper them to the extent that they become overly dependent and not work hard to realize their latent potential. Slight indulgence at times is perfectly ok. Afterall, shouldn't we reward ourselves for the work that we do?

Hope you get your watch purchased approved soon!

why dont you try working out a deal with your wife?

another option of explaining to her, that you are being truthful with the value of the watch, asking her for her opinions before buying shows how much you respect her wish and opinons. perhaps that can give you some brownie points.

else do it the girls way, keep bringing up and whining abt the watch at each opportunity you have. eg, newspaper ad, tv ad, movie.

the evil side of me, might under declare the value, if im buying something, that i hope my mom would not nag abt (but then she always encourage buying!)

Let me play the devil's advocate

I think your wife is ABSOLUTELY correct! No point spending thousands of dollars on a watch when you can get one similar good at a few hundred dollars or less.

              Think about it

Yes, i agree with this point.

Why spend thousands of dollar on a watch?
It can only tell time, or date, or timer. ( Ok lah, dont include annual calendar etc )
It can only give joy to the person wearing it.
It will last you a long time, many many years, with no need to change battery, so have to always justify for next purchase.
It is considered to be "borrowed" from your next generation since you will be passing it down to them
The same amount u can get a reasonably good limit edition bag that will be out of fashion in 3 months? 6 month?
Or get some jewellery that need to buy additional dress to match, and addtional shoes to match?
Ya, why spend so much on a watch??
                Ha ha ha

I see that there are already many good advices given.

I don't have hurdles in buying watches (when I have the money), I only have problem in stop buying watches...

look at this way.... she wont divorce you just because you buy a watch that you have been wanted for a long time...

I use to be in the same situation as you till I start nagging at her on everythings she buy...even for a $1 comb... why buy when you already have 1....:P

Hehe...it's a half-hearted sale to fund another watch. Still love it and will keep and wear it if can't sell at/near my asking price.

                        Sorry TS for OT.

It is definitely what I consider when buying anything(ie cars, handphone, computer, hifi, food), or even when spending. Must try to save money, not value for money, can buy other equally good item at cheaper price. Very hard to justify pulling the trigger. But eventually you have to draw the line, cos in life you must also satisfy the soul, that's why art(I include watches in this category), music, books, sports..... are so important.

So just make sure u have met your savings target for the year then your wife should not have any excuse for you pulling the trigger. cos if she still don't allow u, then u ask her to buy her clothes from this fashion, song&song, market or pasar malam.. cos boutiques also not worth it....

Tell her that it is something a man must own, just like her LV, Prada etc.

If you are using "extra" cash, you are not affecting your savings. We only live once....
