  • New to Rolex - Want to get the most basic one

    Hi all,
i am looking to buy my first Rolex. Looking for something very basic with black face. I went to a watch shop at bukit timah plaza and the lady told me that i should be wearing 'boy' size cos of my small wrist. Does anyone have any model to recommend and price as well? I intend to get it new - what is the recommended shop to buy this? Thx.

Sometimes, it's not the size that matters. You must like the watch by trying it on. I feel trendy sport models like Submariner, is suitable for most guys. Do consider classic Submariner, economical Explorer II or the practical GMT-Master II, coincidentally, all these sports models have black dial. If not, DateJust is also not too bad.

A typical sports model (2nd hand) can cost between 5k to 8k, depending on models and conditions (such as warranty, complete set etc). It's hard to compare. Unless you are keen for a brand new piece, then the price is more consistent, though it's 15%, 20% or more more than a 2nd hand piece.

The "feel" must be there when u wear the watch. Initially, I wanted to get the sub but find it look like seiko, then decide to go for the everlasting classic date just, but in the end, the 1st rolex watch I tried was a sub and I fell in love with it and decided it was the one. Guess you should also ask yourself if you are going to keep/change it in the future? How often you intend to wear it? Daily work or weekend leisure? Or only on special occasions? IMO, the sports series is "suitable" for both formal or leisure wear? Another thing to note is if you will consider to change it in the future, a sports series has more "liquidity", ie easier to sell, either for upgrade or cash...
        Current babies:
        Sub 16610LN D series
        PAM 312 M series
        IWC 500112 Laureus Limited Edition

        Wish list:
        116613LB?
        a good White dial watch

If this is going to be your first Rolex, the chances are it won't be your last. Datejust are good for starters, and I would suggest that you find one with cert so that you can have information related to the watch and grow to appreciate it more. For a good selection, try Koh Watch Enterprise and sister company, AK Watch, as they have a wide range and specialise in Rolex.

Well today I would call all the automatic Rolex models basic except for the chronographs I would try a DJ or 14060m sub.Today all the complete line up except the chronographs are just clones of the cal 3135 with or without added complications. The non date sub got the cal 3130 which is a cal 3135 without the date, the cal 3155 in the Daydate just the added day wheel complication. Now with the GMT just add the second-time zone complication changes into a 3185/86.So the main difference today in the mens line up is case size, case style, and whether S.Steel,TT or other precious metals. The movements are all mostly based on the well proved cal 3135,it makes perfect sense just like the car industry today many cars share the same floor pan but have different bodies.Same for Rolex one basic engine can be slightly modified for most of the line up this means high volume production and keep production costs down.

Went to THG at ION. Wanted to check out the GMT Master 2, selling at $9975. No discount at all. Is this normal for SE not to give discount for sport model?

Can try other outlets, or look out for the bnib pieces in the garage here.. I think now gmtii highly sought after, discount is little to none. it's out of stock at THG raffles when I was there in Jan.

whether customer get discount for sports model can be due to

                    1) supply vs demand - high supply, low demand, discount give. low supply, high demand, little or no discount
                    2) stock quantity available - low stock, discount little or none. high stock, discount more likely
                    3) sales quota - if quota hit, can afford not to give discount. if quota not hit, have to give to entice customer
                    4) r/s with AD - walk-in customer, chance for discount is min. regular customer - chance better than walk-in customer. vip - chance better than regular.

there are many different factors involve. my suggestion is since you have done some leg work, continue doing some more visiting other AD and look in garage section, click on the advertiser banner. this will give you a feel of indicative prices.

Explorer I or II would seem to be the ticket here.
