  • Breaking of link in oyster bracelet

    Hi guys,

as you know its really bothersome to have small wrists with the increasing trend in watch case sizes.

I bought an Explorer II sometime back in June in Switzerland and realised that after wearing it for a while... the bracelet tends to sway to the 12oclock side... which i do not like a lot.

I have been to RSC, and a lady said that it is very common for people with small wrists...

One suggestion she gave was to "break" a link on the 6 oclock side so as to even out the sides thus allowing it not be so uneven... I was unwilling... but now it really is rather irritating...

Any ideas or feedback about the breaking of a fixed link? Any repercussions? Consequences?

    Any other good suggestion?

I don't think RSC Singapore will remove the permanent link for you. I checked with them before.
You can remove one link from the 6 o'clock side with a plier but the link will probably be damaged permanently but it makes a more centred fit on the clasp. If you want to keep the link you may need to check with a watch maker who can remove it without damaging. The daytona or new solid clasp bracelet will not have this problem.

For resale i think you may take a hit if the bro buying counts the links and there are only 12 lol.

Do all rolex bracelets have the same number of links? And how many links?

the lady in RSC actually offered to break the link for me and i doubt there are any watchmakers who can actually remove the fixed link without damaging it....

Agree. That's why I didn't do that for any of my watches ...

              huh really?

Once you do it could you let me know, cos the link can confirm be removed just that it will show that you have less as the broken link cannot be used again.

I forgot the ladies name but thats what she offered to do but she said no guarantees but she did actually do that for her own rolex

Wow... meaning that all these while you guys wanted to do it but didnt know? I thought pple didnt do it cos they are afraid that one less link means less $$ for resale...

if you dont intend to sell your watch, then break the link. if you intend to sell your watch, i suggest you dont. why?

once the permanent link is broken, you can do anything much to it. this may cause the watch not to balance properly.

also, the next potential buyer may have a bigger wrist.

what i suggest is you source for a after market and work with it. at least you still have an original bracelet.

the other option is to use NATO/leather strap.

i see... thanks for the info.

I think i might then have to go for the explorer II that is rumoured to come out next yr then... or is there anyway i can actually purchase the new bracelet and use it for the current explorer?

Anyway if theres anyone who has tried breaking a link, could you post your experience. I thought breaking a link i am still able to add links but just not able to get the link back? And also, i believe the links are still able to be purchased right? thanks everyone...

                      Thans for the fantastic link..

So i guess removing a link is still possible just that the transition will look a little weirder and also a possibility in the drop in the value of the watch though i doubt there are many pple who actually use all 13 links!

Haiz... will drop by RSC this week or next once i decide....

if possible i do hope to purchase the new bracelet as it will be much better... if only RSC does a trade in for the old bracelet and allows a top up of 300-500 bucks that would have been better hehe...

anyway i will also take a suggestion of one of the members here:

Anyone selling a preowned bracelet for oyster fliplock (doesnt have to have all the links; at least 10 will do) but of course with less links the price of your bracelet has to be reasonable

Also if anyone here has broken a link and has regretted it and wants to sell it, pls let me know too ,

can pm me or sms me at 91917785 thanks!

Break the link, wear it comfortable and enjoy your watch. The rest don't need to think now. If now you already thinking of selling it in future than u wont be able to enjoy the watch coz u worried too much over it whenever you wear it. IMMO

thanks and thats also something i figured out that has been happening... if i do not break the link... its just this nagging feeling that i m not happy with the watch even though i do like it.

I will see if theres a reasonable deal on a bracelet the coming week if no i think i will just break the link

Meanwhile anybody suffered frm ill effect of breaking links? pls share thanks
