I have seen Singaporeans wearing Aquanaut, Daytona and an assortment of Pams when flying into or out of Shanghai. Can spot them from a mile (figuratively speaking, of course).

i do not have really expensive watches per se, but when i travel, i go for these few criteria as my travelling watch:
- lume must be good
- can wear and get swim/wet/shower/sleep, for security reasons its on me all the time
- either have 24h timing, bezel wif lume pip, nv had one b4 but one with gmt function
- chronograph is optional
of my collection, most of the time, the seiko black monster wins, i bring a gshock as spare.

Malaysia I wore my sea dweller, no issues. Quite a few times. Other countries no problem. I feel unless there is gold a full or half gold, it shouldn't catch that much attention.
Of course your own disposition plays a huge role too. Are your clothes, handbags branded, wallet branded. Accessories branded. Jewellery will also catch attention.
What car are you driving, these are easier to spot than say a steel model watch.
Never had problems in Malaysia at all.
