  • got a new half-gold sub, got cling-cling noise :(

    Hey guys,

I've been wanting a rolex forever, and browsing this forum from time to time, and now, finally I've taken the step to owning one, and then felt that it's time to sign up for this forum too

Got myself a half-gold submariner for an ORD present. haha.

Wore it ytd and it's real good, but this morning when I put it on, realise that whenever I flick my wrist, there's a moderately audible "clink" sound, when I flick my wrist up, or to the left and right motion.

    is this normal?

Also, i bought from a preown shop, Koh Watches, they are amazing people that helped me pick out this lovely timepiece, but since the watch had no papers and box, shld I take it for verification?

Also, the owner (Darren) was nice enough to change the glass to a new one for me, but I'm jst curious, how to find out if it's really sapphire without trying to slice the glass with a blade?

    thanks to all!
I've got lots to learn about rolex from you guys

Hmm... I think you should have asked more questions before you made the purchase.

      1. Without any paper may mean a big drop in value for your watch. IMO, without box is still alright as boxes are only useful for you to resell your watch in future. Somemore, Rolex watches are easily decomposed as our weather here is wet. But without paper, it's unable to prove your watch authenticity immediately. You ought to send for verification so as to have your piece of mind. Sometimes even with papers, some buyers also want to send for verification.

      2. You should not change the glass as the original ones come with the laser etched coronet. The coronet is a very tiny Rolex crown at the 6 o'clock position. I read some articles that if Rolex Service Center replaces it, it will be replaced with a different coronet. However, if your watch is a very old production, the original glass may not have coronet at all.

      3. Not exactly sure what sort of "click" sound. Since it's a mechanical watch, there are many parts inside the watch. Sometimes, the sound could be from the rotation of rotor, or the metal bracelets are loose, so some parts may produce some sounds during the normal wrist movements.

Anyway, since you have already bought it, I would suggest you to send your watch for verification. If RSC requires your watch to be repaired for servicing, they will advise you separately. Nothing is free in RSC, even if it's a brand new watch with warranty, any servicing is chargable unless it's manufacturer's defect. And the rest, so be it, just enjoy wearing it.

oh dear, did i get ripped off by the pre-own shop dealer? with regards to the sapphire glass, cos he actually said that he's changing the glass out for me to a new and better one.

Also, my colleague who owns a rolex as well, said that instead of bringing it to RSC for a $75 verification, I could ask them to do a servicing qoutation, and then use that as a premise to have RSC check the authenticity as well?

He mentioned that if RSC opens a qoutation for servicing, it means the watch is real and authentic, if there are fake parts, they will know and inform me as well. but the good thing here is not having to part with the $75 for verification.

anyone can shed some light on this?

thanks a lot for the info so far, i really love the watch though. it's 10 years old, so not sure if gt the laser coronet.

Do u know when was the watch last serviced?

As advised by one of the bros here earlier, i would also suggest sending it to RSC either just for verification or like what your colleague suggest -- ask for quotation for servicing to see if any major part replacement is required.

Do not be too alarmed. I think the shop should be quite a reliable one. It's one's individual preferences. Some people prefer the watch to be "as it is", some prefer polishing or repairing to make the old watch as good as new.

To be honest, the price you paid for a TT Sub is not bad. But IMO, I would prefer to send for verification to have a peace of mind. Always trust the watch than the seller. The verification includes all checks, such as case, S/N, bracelet, parts etc. At least after verification, you can be assured your watch is a real one with all parts. During verification, they may also carry out some tests to see whether your watch is running well.

Since you had mentioned the glass has been replaced, see whether you could see the coronet using naked eye, as the replaced glass could be from Rolex. With some light and some angle, you should be able to see it. But mind you, it's very tiny. It's hard to see for if you have not seen it before. It needs some skills. :-P If not, get a magnifier and you should be able to see it. I am not very sure when the cornonet has been installed onto all Rolex watches. If my memory has not failed, I read that it started somewhere in 2001 or 2002 and heard rumors that the new models in future may not have cornonet. See whether you could find from other threads in this forum. Hope it helps.

                Hey bros,

thanks! what do u mean by "TT" sub? I still haven't got used to the terms used here. haha. but will be spending a lot more time on these forums from now on.

i did a check, and the laser etching comes only from 2002 onwards, so mine wldn't have it anyway. haha. he changed it from the small magnifier, to a new glass with bigger magnification of the date.

as for verification, if i bring down for them to qoute a service, will they go through the same procedure as the $75 authenfication? if so, wld u suggest jst asking for a qoute for servicing, rather than pay then 75 bucks to check? or is the verification check more thorough?

sorry i dont know when it was last serviced, but Koh Watches gave me 2 years warranty from them for servicing very nice people.

                thanks

TT means two tones which is also call half gold.

For S$75 vertification, you'll get a so called certification/receipt and a green rolex pouch and u might also get a cleaning cloth but if u're using the so called $$ saving method u will not get that.Hopes this help.

Congrats on your new purchase. Erh, if the TT sub is from 10yrs ago, the bracelet clasp might not be TT, but SS. The watch is what series? and the sound from the watch can only be heard when moving your hand? maybe is becos of the bracelet, my tt blue sub has move noise than my ss sub though. just my 2 cents view.

Its the bracelet that cause the sound. Hold on tight and shake it again.

                              Good advice.

If you still hear a click click sound, then it's almost certain there's something in the movement that's come loose.
