  • Is it better to buy limited edition or mass produce?

Which is better? Is it definitely better to buy limited edition watches. I noticed that they are normally more expensive. Any views?

The term " ltd edition" is so abusively used to entice the product to command a more premium price .... unless " ltd in production " than i would say its worth a second thought. Just my two cents thoughts though.

it really depends. some limited editions increase in value, some don't.

limiting production could just be a way to market the watches and to make them more exclusive (ala if you want one, join the waiting list).

i believe at the end of the day get the one you really like.

at the end of the day....it voiced down to demand and supply... the rule of the thumb is : get the watch u like ...not because of how much it will fetch in the future...

Limited edition watch normally don't enjoy discount hence more expensive. The most is 5% discount given out by SA but that also depend on the model and demand.

It all bores down to what you want in a watch, exclusivity or norm.

if you're a collector, then you should know there are many different types of limited edition that factors into the price...

omega has lots of LE, which usually just means a new caseback and dial job, produced in the thousands and you know they'll stock parts for a long time due to the huge one-off production run and common parts.

patek/AP/JLC's LE are usually the 'real deal' (very low numbers produced with long waiting lists) but you have also have to consider that future servicing costs would be absolutely astronomical and a specialists' avail to handmake whatever parts they don't have.

seiko has LE which (sort of) runs both lines: you have seiko thailand producing LE whenever they feel like it, and you have seiko japan which produces LE in the form of historical collection. inbetween you see their mastershop editions.

the prices for the above-mentioned LEs runs from $200 to $2m. (rolex has never really introduced a LE... the LV sub is a commemorative watch and cannot be considered LE as it's part of their regular line up!)

buy whatever speaks to you if you don't have a collection plan.

u post this question in rolex in general.

as far as im concern, there are far and few 'limited edition' pieces.

take for example when the 16710 was discontinued, there was a batch that was produced with the 3186 movement rather than the 3185 movement.

i rather say rolex produce limited production pieces. they dont produce limited edition.

to me a limited edition = low production numbers and serialized.

would "rare" be a more appropriate, as they include "defective" watches (cream, blackouts, exotic dials).

eg, the 16800/168000s are produced in smaller quantities but do not (currently) command top money and can still be regularly found for sale...
