  • 2nd Hand Dealers aware of what they r selling??

    Hi All,

Are all 2nd hand watch dealers sure of what they are selling is genuine? I'd liked to share an interesting incident here.

The reason I am asking this, is because recently, when my wife and I were window shopping at a well known 2nd hand watch dealer, we came across a beautiful 16750 GMT with a matt minute track dial. Knowing a bit of GMT's, I was quite sure that this 16750 with the minute track dial could not be the genuine article and does not belong on the watch. I asked a few questions about the watch but the staff were unable to answer any of my questions. All they kept saying was the watch is 100% genuine and if I am truly interested, they will ask their boss to come from another branch to entertain me.

Just to be 100% sure, I did some research and querying and yes, I was right. The GMT dial was only made for the 6542's, and will never fit into or meant for a 16750.

Sometimes, we feel secure knowing we are buying from a trusted & reputable dealer. Then again, are the dealers sure of what they are selling?

    Cheers!
    Patrick

    some possibilities

    1) the shop in concern made a genuine mistake when they bought it over from a seller. they then place it on display for sale

    2) the shop in concern made a genuine mistake when they bought it over from a seller. they reconditioned the watch aka replaced the hands with aftermarket ones. other than the hands which you noticed, the rest of the parts say case, bracelet, movement is still original.

    3) the shop made a 'genuine' mistake hoping to catch buyer's ignorance. noticed that the sales staff say will get the manager from another branch to come assist.

hi patrick, i share the same sentiments as you. that's why i'm more cautious when it comes to buying from 2nd hand shops. to be honest, i almost took the plunge for a GMT last nite at one of the shops at chinatown but somehow, it just didn't feel rite so i left.

Sometimes we take it for granted that just because its from a reputable shop, its genuine and we rather save the time and money on verification.

I know of some friends who are like that...

(By the way, with the minute track dial, the selling price was twice that of a normal 16750)
