I have 8 Rolex sport watches. All are not getting enough wrist time and sleeping in the safe box most of the time. I am considering reducing the Rolex watches to 3 but I can’t decide which 3 to be kept for the rational stated next to the model:

M series Daytona black dial: The master of Rolex sport model and the most appealing chronograph. It is like a must have for a watch enthusiast. A cult chronograph watch and no other chronograph come close to it.
M series Explorer 2 white face: This one came with the 3186 movement and there are only 3 white faces from Rolex sports model. The other 2 are Daytona and Milgause.
Z series Blue Sub: I love the beauty of the blue face. The blue colour of this discontinued blue sub look refreshing and stunning and it is the only Rolex sport model with blue face.
Z series Platinum/SS Yacht Master: I love the unique silver dial, red second hand, curve case and the only platinum bezel. The most dressy sport model.
Z series Seadweller: The discontinued SD (including the DS) is the only Rolex sport watch with date but without a Cyclops. The toughest Rolex sport watch.
Z series Green Sub: Sub is a classic and I love the green bezel and the maxi dial. This would probably discontinue when the new SS sub release.
Y series GMT II 16713, half gold: My first Rolex and I like the dial with the golden letterings and marking that shared with the 18K model. Unlike the new GMT IIC, the SS TT and 18K black dial shared the same dial with white letterings, only the 18K anniversary model (green face) with gold lettering. I see a dozen of SS GMT and it is rare to find this discontinued half gold GMT.
Y series Explorer: I love the simplicity of the dial, timeless classic design and comfort on the wrist.

I may sound like that it is better to keep all but if you are in my position. What are the 3 you would keep or which are the ones that you think should not keep and your rationales. Let keep the discussion going. Thank you.

    i will keep these:

1)M series Daytona black dial: The master of Rolex sport model and the most appealing chronograph. It is like a must have for a watch enthusiast. A cult chronograph watch and no other chronograph come close to it.
2)Z series Blue Sub: I love the beauty of the blue face. The blue colour of this discontinued blue sub look refreshing and stunning and it is the only Rolex sport model with blue face.

        Explorer 2

Actually I'm quite surprised that the Explorer 2 garnered so many votes. Was talking to a rolex AD and she mentioned that the Explorer 2 was not very popular here (and hence can get bigger discount)! I'm looking for a GMT watch and is torn btw the GMT2 and explorer2...still weighing the two!

As a Rolex collector my choice are:

          1) Daytona (no other watches can match its reputation for its chrono)
          2) LV submariner (the only rolex watch with maxi dial but house in 40mm casing, green bezel with broad minute hand)

3)TT blue sub (You need at least a half gold Rolex and you may not be able to find that kind of blue again in the new sub)

I also have about the same collection as you are. I love Rolex more than any other watches because of the quality, reputation, resale value and engineering.
For Rolex you can set date on any time (hour and min hands can be at any position) and it will not be over wind, the same cannot be said for other kind of watches.
Rolex stainless steel daytona (black dial)
          Rolex LV submariner
          Rolex TT black submariner
          Rolex GMT2 Pepsi
          Rolex Non date submariner
          Rolex Explorer2
          More...

                hi fellow Daytonian ; )

                my choices are

                1) M series Daytona black dial: Keep it for your son, u are merely taking care of it for him and many generations to come ; )

2)Z series Green Sub:" The Green Eye monster " Once u are bitten by one, u can only save yourself by owning 1. my buddy was bitten by 1, now he is on verge of dying. hahahha

3)GMT II 16713, half gold: Its just such a beauty once its comfortably sitting on your wrist. Saw someone wear it b4 n it such a stunner.

                great collection !!!!

In your case, I'll go with the functionality, followed by the aesthetics. My choice:

                  a. Daytona (since there's only one chronograph);
                  b. GMT2 (a tt watch and the better one against Exp II); and
                  c. SD (since you'll hv the tt GMT2).

                    Dear forumers,
Below is the updated summary of all the responses:

                    Model No of Votes
                    Daytona: 17
                    Explorer II: 8
                    Blue Sub: 8
                    Yachtmaster: 2
                    Seadweller: 4
                    Green Sub: 10
                    GMT-Master: 11
                    Explorer: 0

Based on the advices, the top 3 watches that I should be keeping are: Daytona, GMT and Green Sub. The 3 less popular watches are Explorer, Yachtmaster and Seadweller. After considering the advices, my age (a retiree in my 50’), sentimental reason and most importantly, what I like most. Listed below is my preference in priority order:

Y series GMT II 16713, half gold: My first Rolex and I have to keep a GMT for travelling use. I get compliments whenever I wear my GMT. This is a late Y series that without the lug pin holes.
Z series Blue Sub: I will definitely keep a sub and between the 2 subs, marginally; I lean against the blue sub more as it looks more suitable for my age.
Z series Platinum/SS Yacht Master: The Yachtmaster has a strong emotion attached to it as my wife is wearing a mid size Yachtmaster when we bought as a pair. There are no other Rolex sports watches came with mid size and lady model other than the Yachtmaster.
M series Daytona black dial: I should keep the Daytona not because of its popularity but it is the only chronograph from the collection. The only setback is it may not suit my age.
May be I should trade for a half god or 18K Daytona.

It seems like it is better for me to keep 4 instead of 3.

If I have to reduce my collection, the following would be eliminated: Y series Explorer, Z series Seadweller, Z series Green Sub and M series Explorer 2 white dial.

Thank you for all the responses.

And being curious, how are you going to "eliminate" the three?

I have 4 to eliminate if I have to. I probably would put up at Rolex Garage for sales. But it would ruin my original plan to collect all Rolex Professional models and a Day Date. Just add a Milgauss and a Day Date, I would have completed my collection. On the other hand, the watches are not getting wrist time.

Yes. I would keep Daytona. I would only sell it to buy a 18k Daytona.
