i believe it used to be marketed as a mark of success/towkay'dom, especially in asia, encouraging them to buy a rolex once they can afford one.

i think it has been referred to as: lo-lek kia, lo-lek star, lo-lek ong by the older generations...

plus, rolex sports watches did not take off until the 80s/90s, but by then most of our old folks already own a prestigious rolex and cannot appreciate sports watches - they were busy earning a living on land!

so we all grew up seeing our elders wearing their lo-leks, and it's possible most of us attached the 'ah pek watch' label to it.

but these days, most people wear sports rolex watches, so will they become the 'uncle watch' of tomorrow...?!

on another note, most ah peks/lao uncles have had their rolexes for quite some time... when they were more affordable!

i'm not sure if they would have been able to afford it if the RRP and gold prices of today were applied to the past!

          is rolex a 'uncle' brand

hence more and more people turning to AP, iwc, panerai and omega for a more youthful look?

                    • there is only so much rolex u can buy, all will look kinda of similar after a few models, hence ppl will go for other brands for diff sizes and colors (ap/RM/pp/PAMs)..i have a yachtmaster/daytona/ap and i recently bought the new gmtII blue/black, but sold it the next day and targetting DSSD now.
