In my opinion, watches mean different thing to different people. Wearing a rolex does not make you a better man compared to someone who is wearing a Swatch. Its like driving a car, you can drive a BMW Z4 or a korean car which is 20 years of age, it still brings you to your destination.
I believe watches is a hobby and a passion to a number of people. Its the heritage of the brand as well. And no, rolex watches' 300m water resistance is not a gimmick. They had conducted a number of test and the sea dwellers which promised a 4000ft resistance are a standard issue to the comex divers. these divers had worn them during their expedition underwater and their watches worked as fine. Though i would agree that the price is expensive, as compared to a Swatch, but thats also the draw of it, exclusive and expensive. When we buy a rolex, we are buying more than a watch that tells us the time, we buy the prestige and heritage of owning one rolex as well.
But i understand that the company do give out alot of $$ in charity. So they are like the robin hood of the watch industry, collecting money from people who can afford it and giving them to the people who cannot afford it. This is another good cause to it.
End of the day, its not the watch that we wear that makes us who we are today, neither does wearing a rolex makes us better people. Its who we are and what we have done in the betterment of the lifes of people around us that makes us special. Then why buy a rolex, becos simply, its my hobby, only part of our life, to make us smile more and to get away from the stress of life...
