  • Advice needed

    Hi bros,

Am new to the rolex world and am thinking of purchasing my first ever rolex. Am in love with the Datejust 2 rhodium grey face with diamond dials. However, am just wondering the following:

    1) why is everyone buying the sub? It's nice but does not really stand out to me
    2) I dun see the rhodium datejust 2 in the second hand shops much. Any reason why ?
    3) am considering between 1st hand or 2nd hand. If I get the second hand, what should I look out for?

    Thanks all for the guidance

    Firstly, welcome to the club.

I'll try to answer your questions as much as I can:

    1) Why is everyone buying the sub? It's nice but does not really stand out to me

Not EVERYONE is buying the Submariner in the first place. However, Submariner tends to be the more popular ROLEX model among ROLEX watch hobbyists. Whatever it is, the watch must stand out to you. If not, no matter how popular, it doesn't really matter. So no need to let this bother you too much. Most importantly is to get what you really like and want.

    2) I dun see the rhodium datejust 2 in the second hand shops much. Any reason why ?

Simply, it is because not many people buy/own this model. Thus naturally, less people will resell and you will see less of the model in the second-hand shops. This doesn't mean the watch is any less attractive if you are attracted to it.

    3) Am considering between 1st hand or 2nd hand. If I get the second hand, what should I look out for?

That depends firstly, where you are buying the second-hand piece from, ie a watch shop/dealer, online from owner/dealer selling it. Secondly, how much you are willing to pay for the watch because different age and condition of the watch will command different price. There will also be other criteria that will determine the price further such as availability of the watch box, certificate/warranty card, bracelet links, etc.

if you want hassle free, buy brand new.

if you are buying a second hand, there can be 1-2 things to look out for to more than 10 check point list. this depends on how particular you are on say if a watch has been polished to matching bracelet codes to watch case production code to ......this list goes on.

        1) don't just see picture or what other people wear. Keep yourself open and try out a few model 1st before you decide. This usually is a painful process because you will end up loving a few models lol
        2) Less popular model
        3) there is a buying guide in this forum. Refer to that.

triton is right - and beyond hassle free, buying new from AD is also worry free. there's no need for second guessing about ANYTHING that is related to your watch.

if price is a concern, you can get good deals in HK ADs (not far away and cheap on budget airline) - day trip is totally possible and not difficult.

i'm sure for bread and butter models like the DJ, you will find the combination you want somewhere in HK.

the sub/ sub date is not rolex's top selling model.

That's great advice. Thank you. I have tried any and still like the datejust. I checked hour glass and it was lowest price at 12500. However, one of the shops in lucky plaza, offered me 11800 for the same one 1st hand.
