I would say a 36mm explorer 1 114270, the quintessential rolex watch. Very conservative, very classy.

Other rolexes can include the Air-King, oyster quartz, classic datejust 36mm amongst others.

No way would I go for a submariner or any of the modern rolexes.

Me too. Planning to get my dad a rolex. He is in his early 50s, he likes the blue face rolex "king". Does that mean Air King?

He will be happy with whatever I buy for him, if he is still around. ;(

        I will get him a 16233....
Just another small small small small watch user ....

i think it's a datejust or day date. i'm not really sure which, but it is definitely not air king.

We both have the same watch although different generation.

Got a 36mm dj for my father during my Europe holiday last year bcos I think he prefers a watch with date. If not the explorer 1 would be my choice.

Guess he will like any watch I bought for him like a simple birthday present from my daughter to me.
                    In my possession

Actually my dad is frugal and has been sticking to his $20 Casio for years. I share with him stories about people spending $10k on a watch and he will disapprove and laugh it off. Hmm like that also difficult to buy any Rolex for him, don't u guys think?

If I give him, he might not know the actual value(price) of the watch, and if I do tell him, I think he will be upset I spend that kinda money. lol

tell your dad it was a super cheap deal because of the "lousy" condition it was in and you paid only $100 to refurbish it, and it will be a big big pity if he doesn't wear it while the price continues to appreciate and that the condition doesn't really matter during resale because of the low price you got it for and another $100 and it's good as new again.

my old man did not always approve of me buying expensive watches, and my parents were shocked when they once found out the price of a watch i bought, but it's my money and i always assure them i don't lose money when i sell them on. he's okay with it now and not surprised anymore.

also, i carved a sentimental message on my dad's watch and took away his cheap watch so he has to either wear the watch i give him or buy another watch. he actually found another cheap watch from deep in his safe and i took that away too.

i'll share a wrist shot when my old man comes back from his holiday.

Wish my son/ daughter will turn out to be like you..... note that with your budget, it will have to be pre-owned.
