  • It all in the mindset folks... imagine Rolex having such high standard would have parts produced in China/Vietnam??!! It would probably cost them MORE in terms of reputational risk to produce elsewhere than the saving from outsoucing these parts!

Not really to save cost but to meet production demand. Sometimes I just wonder how Rolex manage to produce 2000 watches per day when they have so much quality control to go through. So it makes sense for them to outsource the making of some of their bracelets at their factory located in the another country. But yet again, u are right to say that rolex will not risk their reputation and have something made in China. Actually I asked a staff at Sincere Watches Vivo City and he wasn't really sure but still told me that the entire watch is made in Geneva. Should be lah since on the bracelet it engraves there, "Made in Geneva". If they outsource means that they cheated...Then it's a very big issue...

      • It's bull. My first Rolex was from Swiss as tour guide and as well as some tour members say unlike when purchased in Singapore, the bracelets do not "bite" your skin. Later I got to know the seniors in this forum and learned the truth. :-P

        • Adding further, one of the uncles in the tour group was wearing a sub and we compared its weight with those in Swiss. The Swiss one was significantly heavier! This convinced us that the Rolex in Swiss are indeed of better quality.

Few months later after I joined this forum than I found out why.

The uncle was wearing an old model sub, those with pin holes, 16610s. The ones with hollow end links, hollow center links, metal sheet feeling kinda clasp and smaller case. The sub in Swiss were the new 116610s. Lol! Lesson learned. Be smart but dun act smart. Hahaha.

          • In the end, almost everyone in my tour group bought a Rolex. Some bought more than 1, some bought the rg Daytona. No discount except VAT rebate.

Now I know why the tour guide was smiling so much after that day and why the Rolex shop even open Champaign for us. I wonder who were the ones celebrating. The buyers or the sellers? Lol!

we have Poincon de Geneve, made in geneva and swiss made; three quite different standards. 100% "swiss made" is not 100% produced and manufactured within switzerland.

additionally, we know that rolex used to use parts made by swatch group (before parachrom blu, etc) and other companies in the process of assembling watches. these parts are still stocked/used today during RSC overhaul of the older generations of rolex watches.

              eg, shocks, springs, dials, etc...

do we know where these parts are made?

realistically, it is not possible to say that any modern watch is 100% produced in switzerland. i mean, i'm sure their gold and other materials comes from other countries...

additionally, after the integration/takeover of many "units" (outsourced prior), rolex remains ever more guarded about information. who can blame them?

as long as we know the watch is ROLEX MADE i think this should be sufficient.

Ya but my main question is whether there's any difference in buying watches in Switzerland as compared to other countries besides pricing and tax issue. I personally think there isn't lah cos so far no hard facts to state that watches in Switzerland are entirely made locally while those exported ones might not. Just that how funny tour guides can give information like that. Still if u ask me, as long as the watches in Switzerland are not more expensive than Singapore, I will still wanna buy there...

                • Maybe one day, just maybe, we may see parts of a watch coming from countries outside of Swiss... Hope Rolex would not be the first though! I am a die hard fan of everything Rolex

                  • Buying Watch in Switzerland

                    Hi guys,

Where is the best place to go watch shopping in Switzerland? Zurich or Lucerne or some other cities? Would be happy to hear some tips and guides.

Thanks in advance for the info. Would appreciate it also if you guys could point me to some posts that have already been made in PWC regarding this matter.

                    Cheers!

                    • Switzerland is actually very expensive to buy but is an excellent place to browse the latest models. If you want to buy Italy is the country to buy as the net VAT is high and discounts are available. In Switzerland the prices are all set in SFr so it doesn't really matter where you buy.The net VAT is pretty low in comparison to other European cities and discounts are usually not available . The best city to visit for watches would actually be Geneve and Basel.

                        • Xmas shopping in Switzerland

Thinking of getting a Sub and Lady DJ in Switzerland. I was told that I could save a few hundred bucks (probably VAT and some discounts) if I buy from there. Is it true?
