So whether our ADs trade-in watches or not, it doesn't matter as customers will stay hunt around for better deals to sell their old watches for new ones..

Why I ask is because this can save some customers the hassle of having to sell their old watches outside. Just like what DarkAngel said, like hp pre-own mkt, you sell to ah beng shop, you may get a better price as compared to trading in to singtel. But still, some pple do it. Why? Ans: (refer to my first sentence). In addition, this is also good in constantly building the rapport with your AD(s). You may be re-selling your old at a lower price but I'm sure, the new piece you are buying is also lower (better discount). Jus my tots la. Thanx for sharing.

Sori forgotten to add tat it'll be easier for te AD to convince you to buy a new piece from him as he can take in your old one and entice u by giving a higher resale value. It works both ways la..

on the other perspective, if they take in a high resale value for pre-own then will they cut the discount given like they normally do? which brings me to this, specialisation.

if they have to deal with pre-own watches, then they need to get someone in to value the watch. this will increase costs as well.

though i have dealth with my SE/SA for more than 3 years already, i still do my own homework.

dont get me wrong that i dont believe in your theory. it is like a one-stop place where u can handle all transactions instead of going around. this concept is good for watch lovers who flip watches often. but for people who dont flip, what makes the difference could be the price and service rendered.

I think I can only agree to part of what you have said. But it's kinda like not how it works at all. I believe there are many points brought up in the posts before this, but the thing is that this is not like trading in ur phone at a shop and buying another for abit cheaper. Rolex is more like a "exclusive" item, unlike a mobile phone where there are soooo many ADs out there,so I believe that we cannot compare both.

for me, if i was the AD, i would prefer to keep the new/preowned seperate. that way, open up another business using diff name, and operate as preowned, then you just push customers to/from each other. those want to sell push to preowned shop, those want to buy new, push to AD. that way everybody is happy, and the line seperating new and used are kept seperate

                Eh. Is Rolex that exclusive?

Also there are many hp dealers as well. why is it it works in their industry and not watch? i would say the setup costs is one factor, if the range of watches is little, hard to survive. furthermore, if these watches are not authenticated prior to bought over, what happens @ a later stage found there are non-original parts inside? that is why these days these shops take down IC number and name and address to safeguard.

exclusive when compare to other swiss watch? probably not, but definitely more exclusive then the mobile phones.

wouldnt that be the responsibility of the buyer (ad). because you are the "professional" and you should know what you are buying, therefore you have the right to reject what I have bought to your shop to trade, but if you do not take a proper look, and end up that there is aftermarket part inside, I as the seller cannot be held liable (unless there is proof that malicious intent to defraud)

this has happened before with one of the pre-own shop, that is why i said they would probably need to employ a in-house technician to verify. this would then eat into the cost of buying the watch(ad perspective). as what u mentioned, there is nothing that can be done once it cross hands. the taking of IC and name is more of security that if they find out the piece is stolen.

in second hand business, taking of particulars is mandatory for legal sake. i have seen reputable pawnshop selling stolen goods, so it will not solve the problem, rather it is a hindrance for wouldbe thieves.
but if the loot put in front is too good to be true, then the buyer will still want to purchase.
