  • Pls Clarify - Do not adjust date bt 9pm and 3 am

    HI All,

Cld some one advise on the above for mechanical watches? 2 versions I have heard

ver 1)A watch mechanic told me not to use the quick-set function to set the date bt the said time; its ok if you use the min hand go round for the date change. Is tt correct?

ver 2) You cant even use the min hand to change the date; u hv to power up the watch, let it pass 3 am before you use the min/quick set hand to set the correct date.

    My Qs :-

    1) If watch stops at 10 pm, its 5 am and u need to set correct time(hence date as well), can u use the min hand - ie ver1) is correct?

    2) If you watch stops outside the said time, eg 7 pm, does that mean that u can use quick set/min hand to set the date? i dun understand, at 7pm u still need to cross 10-12 pm to set the date. if u stop at 10pm (a split second pit stop rest for your fingers) while winding the crown, wldnt it be akin to changing the date within the no-go time period?

thanks for all your advice and clarifications.

It is correct that you should not use the quick date function to change the time from 9pm to 3am for watches with this function. IN fact, if you want to change the date between this timing, you will feel a tension. Unless you force it, otherwise, it should not turn.

You can use the minute hand to move the watch until it automatically change the date to the next day. This is to stimulate the watch movement. Nothing is wrong with it.

Q1: Yes you can use minute hand.
Q2: If the date is just a day or 2 before, then just use the minute hand to move the watch and let it change the date by itself. If your date is way off, then you may want to follow my method below

I don't wind my watches and i wear then randomly. When I want to wear them, I will do the following:

    - Wind them up. Charge the power reserve even if is an automatic watch.
    - Since I am unsure when the watch actually stops, it can be 11pm or 11am. S I'll turn the minute hand to a time that is 100% not within 10pm - 3am. I always use 6 o clock.
    - Use quick date function to change the date to yesterday's date.
    - Use the minute hand again to turn and move the watch.. let it do the date change to the correct date at 12midnight.
    - From there I will need to know I need to turn more then 12 rounds if I am adjusting to a pm timing or lesser to have an am timing.

I hope it is not too complicating

I usually use ver1 on my ETA movement watches. (i.e if the data is btw 9-3, I will use the minute hand and not the quick date mtd.)

note: 9-3 meaning that I don know if its 9am-3pm or 9pm-3am. I just use the minute hand to set the date or to move the timing out of this range before using the qk date feature.
I dont need another watch, I dont need another watch, I dont need another watch, I dont need another watch.........

          It is very simple.
Dont complicate it. There is only one rule to follow:

DO NOT USE THE QUICK DATE FUNCTION DURING 10pm - 3am

You use the minute hand, turn how much also nevermind.

When unsure and very scared to spoil the watch, you can just use the minute hand. I remember I did that for my Corum because I thought there isn't a quick date function. I turn for 24 rounds x 20 days = 480 rounds.

yeah it is as what bro edsonchan says to be safe.

For Rolex date can be set at anytime.

Most others cannot, especially ETA based and those which does not change date instantaneously.

Please correct me if i m wrong.

I have not played with a 16610 or datejust before.

GMTIIC don't have quick date function.

Can the rest share with us if Rolex's quick date function can be set anytime? I may be wrong but i seriously doubt it can..

My watch mechanic told me to use the quick-set date function at 6.30 position. Say its the best for mechanical watches. Just my 2cent of comment.
