Things to note when buying from a second-hand dealer?
Hi guys, I'm looking to pick up an IWC from one of these second hand dealers. For confidentiality's sake, I shall not be naming the shop.
Thing is, I've been told that the watch comes as-is, no box / papers because the guy has "lost" them (the guy I'm referring to is the shop owner). But he assures me that it is authentic, even prompted me that I could have it verified at Richemont.
Of course I could pick it up and have it brought to Richemont for a service quotation or something similar, but I wouldn't be able to do that unless I have already paid for the piece. I have seen the watch on 2 occasions and have no reason to believe that I'm getting a dud, but I want to be sure before throwing my lot.
As mentioned, condition of watch is almost LNIB, or at least a good 95% to me. The watch was produced in limited quantities and is discontinued. I've been looking for this watch without much luck, either that or I have been quoted exorbitant prices. This IWC would eventually be a keeper (I am sure of this) so I am not sure if the box and papers mean a lot to me since I will not be reselling this.
Enough of my essay, what should I take note when buying pre-owned pieces that come with no box / papers?
i see no reason why you cannot get it authenticated @ richemont even though if it means you have to pay for the watch first.
you can ask the shop owner to include on the receipt a clause that is similar that if the watch is found not to be authentic by richemont, the shop will provide full refund of the watch. however to be fair to the shop owner, you can say that you do it on same day of sale. that is provided the shop owner is willing to trust the buyer.
alternatively, you can suggest to the shop that the watch is authenticate on a particular date and you will pay for verification if the watch is authenticated by richemont and you purchase on same date of authentication. then again, you will have to trust the shop owner.
if both parties are not going to trust either party, then it is likely to end up in a stalemate situation.
you mentioned that other pieces you seen are @ high price. i would like to ask if other pieces come with box and papers. personally, i dont the buy reason that the shop owner will misplace warranty papers and box. i seldom hear of this especially if it is a limited edition piece. for a watch that is limited edition, without box and papers, i would not even consider if the price is very much lower.
most important is that you have to trust the shop owner if buying the watch.

For authentication, it really works only when both parties go down together to the service center and witness that.
Also there is the issue of what happens if watch is found to be non authentic, will service center confiscate the watch? If indeed confiscated then how does seller know it is really confiscated?
Thanks triton and Oceanklassik, I think the most likely scenario is paying for the watch and including the clause for full refund in the event that the watch is not authenticated. Given that Richemont no longer provides authentication service, is successfully getting a service quotation the sure-fire way that I am holding onto an authentic piece?

I have some concerns against this...what happens if watch is not found to be authenticate? Will Richemont confiscate the watch and how are u going to proof to seller it was confiscated so that u can get the refund? If Richemont returns the watch to u, there is also the risk that the shop might challenge whether u indeed brought for authentication since there is no black and white that Richemont has found it to be non authentic?

Well I can't possibly ask the shop owner to go to Richemont with me right? I'm sorry, but this is my first purchase with a second-hand dealer instead of a private collector.
Do they actually confiscate your watch if it's a replica?!

i hear that there are cases like that, do a google, u will see that replicas are typically confiscated by custom authorities. my guess is that service centers will also confiscate especially since this is a serious trademark infringement.
of course, your argument would be that u had brought it to the service center based on representation from the watch dealer that this is an authentic piece, and it would not be illogical for you to even bring it to the service center had you been aware that it is a replica.
I'm sure if you made the purchase legally with the shop, a receipt would be issued, right? If you are afraid of such confiscation, check first with the Richemont staff before handing over the watch. The staff should be able to advise you appropriately and I believe they will not just confiscate the watch like that. If at all they are to do that, then don't hand in the watch. Seek an alternative source of verifying your watch with an independent watch technician like JW Watch, etc.
Hi people, I'm new here. I have a Passed down 6694 black face gold dials but the crown faded to "rainbow" lookalike colour instead of gold. Does that means it's not original?
