  • Where Do Grey Dealers Get Their Pieces From?

    Hi Guys, I was wondering if anyone of you could shed some light. I've been poring through these pages and I note that there are quite a few bros. here who are able to sell BNIB pieces. Some claim that they got it from overseas ADs etc.

    I have some questions:

    1. For those who have purchased from overseas ADs, it would appear that the cost of getting a piece overseas is relatively cheaper than in Singapore. True/False?

    2. If true, then where (i.e. country) can one go to specifically to get good deals for:
    a. Rolex;
    b. IWC;
    c. JLC;
    d. Panerai?

    Pls don't flame me if I am asking the obvious...

    Of course overseas is cheaper that's why can sell cheaper...

    Where to get cheap overseas sets? If I know I will become a dealer... If I am a dealer, I will not tell where to get cheap watches....

      This topic has been regularly discussed and you should be able to get your answers if you do a search here.

      In short, the lower prices for overseas watches is mainly due to two main factors: currency exchange rate + tax deductions.

      As for getting better prices for the brands mentioned, it is subjective. Based on hearsay (for me) so far, ROLEX - Dubai, Hong Kong, Japan and Korea; IWC - Kuala Lumpur (I just went and found out for myself it is TRUE!), JLC - , pam - USA.

              the problem is that gray dealers can tell you where they get also. but the question is whether you can get the watch you want @ the price the gray dealers get.

              these gray dealers purchase from overseas dealers just like how some of us would purchase from local dealers. they build a relationship with them. as such, since their jobs allow them to travel to the particular country, it is just additional pocket money along the way.

              that is why ppl can tell you go HK can get cheap rolex but then when you go there, the price is not that cheap. why? because u r just a walk in customer. furthermore, they know that you will be probably a one-time off purchase, why should they offer you special price? it wont make economic sense to them.

                You can find out where they get their watches from, but first you must buy from them . After buying take a look at the warranty stamp. It would contain the foreign AD's shop name.

                Some gray dealers are known to buy entire monthly allocations by brands to certain ADs. That means they have to buy the not so popular pieces too. So the AD fulfill their obligations to principal, and the gray dealer gets a fantastic discount. Win win situation.

                That means instead of the AD earning say 100% markup for a rolex for a walk in customer, they are happy to earn 50-60% markup from gray dealer who in turn earn 20-30% from end buyer.

                  This one I heard before... But won't the gray dealers have a hard time selling off the not so popular pieces?

                            Is it possible that aircrew (e.g. pilots and cabin crew) could be involved in these imports of timepieces? I can see them swapping flights just to go buy a couple of pieces...
