Well, following the winding requirements is the first thing to do but what I can't understand is that the winder will still over wind the watch after sometime in the winder. From your experience of looking a the circuit of different winders do they all used 555 as their timer? If yes, and if it is accessible and possible I would like to tweak it to have lesser TPD(maybe half of 650).

Most of us are naive until something happens to our watches that we learn (the hard way). As I've said, I'd rather keep my watch on winders with single pods and follow the winding requirements.

I've learnt it while "diving deep into winders".

    Thanks so much for sharing!

I was just wondering, if overwinding may potentially cause harm to the watch mechanism, is it not logical to think it may be better to lower the winding speed, say using a 650 TPD for a watch mean for 800? Are there any cons associated with underwinding?

the issue with underwinding a watch can be there is not enough power reserve to keep the watch to tell good time. i was once advised that as a watch power reserve drops to a certain level, the accuracy of a watch drops. why? as the torque is not enough transfer from one part to another. only 1 watch i heard is able to have accuracy even if the power reserve is reduced. however, can recall the brand and model. how true? test on your watch.

to test this, sync watch with atomic clock. then make sure the watch pr is maximize. let the watch power reserve to reduced over period of time. check time on watch against atomic clock to see any difference.

I got this answer from SG Ball today,
'Our technician advised for a minimum of 25% of the power reserve to maintain timing accuracy. Pls feel free to contact us if you need further assistance.'
If that is the case if my PR when full is 42hrs, I need to make sure that min it must have at least 10.5hrs(25%) of PR winding in the main spring. Let say if my watch require 650 TPD to reach full PR, 25% will be about 162 TPD. So maybe there is still room to lower the TPD without affecting the accuracy and also minimising over wind. I'm not sure whether this make sense, if not please correct me.

Besides TPD, I am also curious to understand the effect of the winding direction. Based on the advice of the guys from Orbita, it seems that CW settings can be used for most watches, even for watches categorized as having bi-directional requirements (ie Rolex watches). This issue popped up in my head when I realized many Orbita winders do not actually offer the bi-directional winding function, with only CW and CCW as the standard ones.

A bi-directional wound watch can be wound either CW or CCW. Many many many people get confuse that it must be wound CW and then CCW OR, CCW then CW!

More than 90% of watches wind in a CW direction so dun worry bro, this unit will serve you for a really long time!

Again, I suggest you approach your brand's service centre to confirm.
I had an impression in the past that my AP can be wound bi-directional, but after consulting the AP tech, i was advised to stick one direction (CCW). But again, it depends how old is your AP. Mine was a older chrono. Newer ones can be bi-directional.....
