im sourcing for a winder now and it is pure hell. i want a winder with selectable tpd and directions. but i get conflicting information regarding my watches' requirements.
take from eilux website:
Most Rolex Automatics: Counter Clockwise
Orbita:
Most Rolex Automatics: Both 650tpd
CONFLICTING
For my Panerai.
Eilux:
Luminor Submersible Diver's Professional (PAM 00024 / 25 / 106 / 170) : Clockwise
Movement: Caliber OP III: Alternate
PAM 024 Luminor Submersible Diver's Professional: Alternate
SAME MANUFACTURER WEBSITE, CONFLICTING INFO.
Orbita:
Caliber OP III: CW 800tpd
PAM 024 Luminor Submersible Diver's Professional: CW 800tpd
how to choose winder like that. i don't even know my watches' requirements. headache man.

2 ways,
call richemont and ask about panerai. call rolex and ask also.
other way is buy and try out. if anything goes wrong. good luck. anyway, as far as i know. orbita setting for rolex is correct.
maybe different brand makes their winder different? as mentioned before 650 for rolex is good enough. eilux is using 900. kinda high imhoif you have issues with your account, click here for self help and read forum rules here. 90% of your answers can be found in Forum FAQ

good enough is always subjective.
to me
- only 1 watch on 1 rotor
- ability to set TPD and direction for each rotor
- warranty on winder (on parts including adapter)

is watch winders really necessary? last time, i have bought a taiwan made winders from the accessories section. it broke down after a about half a year. and the distance between the watch is too close for comfort during winding. so dun bother to go bring it for repair. so just use it to store watch now.
for now, if my watch stop. i just manual wind it, then wear it and off i go. if i dun wear it, i just leave it alone and let it stop.
now my question is, will winding it only when need to be use do damage to the watch? i dun mind spending a few mins doing some winding and adjustment.

There are two schools of thought for watch winders. Some find it necessary (esp those who own many automatic watches & are lazy to wind them); others, not so. To me, I need to rest my watches after some period of usage so I am in the latter camp. Unless of course, I have too many automatic watches to have to rotate, then I may get one in future.

i would if you have a perpetual or annual calendar watch, then winder is probably a must because to set the watch after it has stopped can be daunting task for some.
also if you have more than say 4 watches to rotate, it would make sense to get a winder out of convenience.if you have issues with your account, click here for self help and read forum rules here. 90% of your answers can be found in Forum FAQ

In the 1st setting the winder turns clockwise for 5 minutes and then pauses 15 minutes. It will repeat for 24 hours (1440 minutes)… until you turn-off the mains.
- Motor turns 9 times in one minute, thus in 5 minutes it will turn 45 times.
- One winding sequence equals (5 + 15 minutes =) 20 minutes.
- In a day (1440 minutes), there’ll be 1440 divide by 20 minutes = 72 sequences; this means that the (5 minutes-15 minutes) sequence will be repeated for 72 times.
- Multiple 45 by 72 = 3240 TPD; this means your watch will turn 3,240 times in a clockwise direction.
Could I use a timer for brand ABC and run it for 6 hours per day, so that TPD can reduce to 800? ....Provided the winder runs on AC, of course.

Yes bro, you are right.
For the benefit to all... calculation is as follow:-
Winder turns 5 min @ 9rpm giving 45 turns
The winding sequence adds up to (5min CW + 15min Pause) 20min
For 360 min (6hrs), 360 divide by 20 min = 18 repetitions
45 turns x 18 reps = 810TPD
Mathematically, we get 810 but in actual case, it'll depend on the weight of the watch, the tilt angle, weight & construction of turntable, etc...

to me a good winder is one that winds the watch enough to keep power reserve. not one when you buy and then buy another timer to regulate the power.
this is silly, can you image the watch winder selling you the winder say, here you go, set the timer as well to control the TPD.
it is in other telling customers (potential included) that my winder is 'faulty'.
