PAM111 or PAM312 would hold more value over time?

Of course the only way that Panerai can expand is to grow vertically by fabricating their movements in-house. This helps to strengthen their quality standards as everything now will be controlled.
And yes, maybe Panerai may be taken more seriously as a true watch maker. However, as a layman who likes Pams and its designs, I am not really bothered by the movements. Maybe that is why I am not a Paneristi, yet!
But I am interested to see how it all plays out!
Thanks for the info on the movements though!

I doubt so - 111 resale value is not as good as 312
For eg a preown 111 resell about 40% off its retail price, whereas a same series 312 resell for about 33% off its retail
That is 7% difference
I suppose its due to third party vs inhouse movement

With the 510 looming on the horizon, I reckon the 111 should command better value in the not too distant future. I heard run ours this might be replacing the 111. And rrp is only $100 more.I don't have enuf watches but I will stop buying now!

Pam111 will probably only pay off many years down the line when it becomes rarer
Like atleast 20-30 years frm a fashion or the "in thing" view the 312 will hold more value
due to demand for in house mvmt from Panerai"He could not just wear a watch. It had to be a Rolex." Ian Fleming, Casino Royale (1953)

1) In-house movements
Yes, the present batch of in-house movements seem superior to the decorated ETA movements. But looking back at Panerai history, the originals back then (yes, those very pieces that sell for US$360,000 vintage pieces) also used 3rd party ROLEX manual wind movements. It's almost "tradition" to use 3rd party movement, so don't sweat it.
2) Tradition vs Fashion
Talking about "tradition", the reason Panerai became such a hot brand is because very little people know about its MILITARY HERITAGE. Yes boys and girls, Panerai was used mainly for underwater demolition by the fascist forces (you know, Hitler, Mussolini, etc). Despite their infamous association, people greatly respected the men who trained hard and became the blueprint for the SAS and Navy Seals later on. This was the reason Panerai had a cult following. Not because of the movement (thank ROLEX), not because of fashion (the originals were ALL 47mm, or larger... no p1ssy 44mm, 42mm, etc), and certainly not because of haute horlogerie (haha!). Sly did have a part to play in terms of increasing the awareness of the brand, but trust me, people didn't start appreciating it because of him, it was largely because of that elite military heritage that no other watch brand could boast.
3) Sizes
Frankly speaking, if you want a Panerai for what it was famous for, it's quite clear, 47mm. But, if you want to be associated with the "fashion" side of the brand (see above point), then go nuts, there's a size for everyone. Choose one that matches with your shirt, your man bag (or hand bag), your car, etc.
4) Complications
The most complicated complication that Panerai watches had back then, was the second hand. That's all. In fact, the base model (just the hour and minute hands) was what the brand was really known for. The second hand was a modification. The brand was never known for having the most "haute" complication in the first place. Now with GMTs, dates, even chronos, well, it's a fashion choice more than anything. Make sure it matches your wardrobe.
Sorry if the above came out a little in-the-face. Just wanted to share the plain facts about the brand and equip potential buyers with what they're really throwing the tens of thousands of dollars out for. Btw, once the fad dies down, the only collectible Panerais will still be the original vintage ones (yep, the ones that costed $360,000 and CLIMBING!).

IMO, with the current crop of Pams, I doubt they will appreciate in prices. And I agree with Rougehog that the only collectible Pams will be the vintage ones, if you can find any or deep enough pockets to get them!
Not holding my breath about my Pams appreciating! Haha!

I am the thread starter, and I bought the 111 about 1 month ago. Never look back
As i was going to Switzerland and Italy, I emailed all the ADs before I flew over. True enough, almost all of them have the 312. For 111, only 1 AD has it in stock, 2 other ADs are confident they could get it. The rest told me not to place my hope too high.
Why I decided on the 111 is because of the following reasons :
1. Credible rumour : Heard from at least 2 Italian ADs that Panerai is not making 111 from next year onwards, so the 'P' is the final series. (Only 1700 made this year).
2. Movement : Because Panerai is shifting all their models to in-house movement, ETA will be more like a 'rarity' in the long term future. It may or may not fetch a higher price in the future, but 10, 20 years later when all Panerai are with in-house movement, I'm sure I will be proud to be an owner of a Panerai with ETA movement.
3. Personal : 111 is the 1st Panerai which caught my eye when I was searching for watches to buy. nuff said
